Greek frigates of Class "Standard", will patrol the maritime borders of Greece

The decision may also include water control with Albania, from a frigate,
equipped with helicopter.

The decision was taken by the Greek government, in a meeting of the Supreme Defense Council, addressed to the Ministry and the Greek Army. With this decision, the 9 frigates Class "Standard", will pass to replace the other coastal vessels, of "Coast Guard" especially in areas of the eastern Mediterranean.

According to DefenceNet, extraction of 9 frigates "Standard" Class, from 14 frigates in total of the Hellenic Navy fleet, has to do with increasing tensions in East Mediterranean, and increasing the flow of illegal immigrants from Asia to the eastern borders of Greece.

With this decision, according to the portal News of Defencenet. that Greece's territorial waters, does`not exclude the possibility that even in the Ionian Sea, the Greek frigates, the AOZ, to be protected from the ever-increasing flow of illegal immigrants that tries to reach Italy, as well as against Albanian traffickers, who carry with guns and the drog from Albania to Greece.

Greece's northern borders, have become problematic, especially in the northern part of Corfu, along the border with Albania, which have increased recently attempted to pass large quantities of drugs, but also weapoins contraband. In the island of Corfu, operates a rapid response unit, equipped with Marines team by sea and air, but the possibility of establishing a frigate, is seen as necesarely, say sources.
