All national and international environmental laws will be respected during oil exploration efforts in the Ionian Sea by the Norwegian firm that has undertaken the project, Environment, Energy and Climate Change Minister Evangelos Livieratos assured reporters earlier this week.

He noted that all necessary measures to protect the environment and sea mammals swimming the waters where the exploration is taking place have been taken.

The Minister also pointed out that the activities of the survey vessel "PGS" were being monitored by the coast guard and the Greek Navy, with the supervision of both the foreign ministry and the environment ministry, making any violation of international environmental rules extremely unlikely.

In addition, the crew on board the ship included two scientists working for the ministry's oil policy and three mammal observers responsible for protecting the environment and dolphins during the search efforts, he added.
