“Constitution, Vojvodina autonomy must be respected”

NOVI SAD -- Nobody is allowed to jeopardize Vojvodina’s autonomy or violate the Constitution, says President Tomislav Nikolić.

“There is no border between Vojvodina and other parts of Serbia because it is determined by the Constitution and because the Serbian citizens want it that way,” the Serbian president said at a ceremony marking the 94th anniversary of unification of Vojvodina (Banat, Bačka and Baranja) with the Kingdom of Serbia.
He called on all those who “are drawing borders between Serbia and the province to throw their pencils away and stop causing differences among the people”.

The president stressed that he had “doubts” about good intentions of those who caused rifts in Vojvodina “because they want to return us to years before the conflict”.

Nikolić stressed that a Serb who caused trouble among Serbs could not live together with members of other ethnic minorities who “are honest residents and citizens of Vojvodina”.

“Anybody who causes trouble does not mean well to citizens of Vojvodina and does not have Serbia’s best interest at heart, but they should not be carried away because they are not interesting to Serbia,” the president noted.

He said that the fact that the ceremony was jointly organized showed that “we can be united when times are difficult”.
