Opponents of Serb President Aleksandar Vucic broke into the state-run RTS television building on Saturday, demanding to address the population, in images aired live.

There have been weekly opposition protests since December against what they describe as Vucic's slide towards autocratic rule, while accusing RTS of pandering to the ruling party and demanding more airtime for opposing views.

Among the dozens who invaded RTS on Saturday were opposition figures including former Belgrade mayor Dragan Djilas and Bosko Obradovic, leader of the right-wing Dveri party.

Interior Minister Nebojsa Stefanovic denounced the action in a statement run on RTS.

Private TV channel N1 showed images of police starting to remove the protestors from the RTS premises.

Albania-Greece negotiations on pause due to deadlock

SManalysis

He mainly referred to two laws related to the minorities’ property protection at the front of the Himara coast and the right for self-declaration that they are part of the Greek minority.

Another reason Katrougalos mentioned when asked on the progress of Albania-Greece negotiations and the interrupted dialogue, which had taken off when former Albanian Foreign Minister Ditmir Bushati and former Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias were in office, was that the Greek government was expecting a clearer answer on greek minority issues.

TIRANA, Mar. 14 – The Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Katrougalos said in a radio interview on Thursday that negotiations between Greece and Albania on a number of important issues have slowed down also due to Albania’s deadlock – something official Athens takes in consideration.

He mainly referred to two laws related to the minorities’ property protection at the front of the Himara coast and the right for self-declaration that they are part of the Greek minority.

“For the moment, we’ve received some answers from the Albanian side, there is a “fusion” of negotiations, but it is premature to say there will be a positive or negative result,” he said.

Katrougalos added the Greek side wants to see an improvement of bilateral issues between the countries and for Albania’s EU path to open.

Up until last July, Athens and Tirana were conducting a number of head-to-head meetings through Kotzias and Bushati, in order to reach agreements on a number of open-ended issues between them, accumulated through the years.

Agreements were actually reached on building cemeteries for the Greek soldiers who died in Albania during WWII, the apostille stamps, while the abrogation of the War Law with Albania is still expected by Athens. Meanwhile, the Greek side removed any possibility that the Cham issue would be on the table for discussion, while retaining rights to negotiate greek minority issues.

Nonetheless, the issue that was most debated by political actors from all sides of the spectrums, experts and the public opinion alike was a new maritime border deal between the countries and the lack of transparency that accompanied the negotiations between Bushati and Kotzias.

The negotiations to reach a new maritime border agreement that would finally divide the naval space shared by the countries were promoted publicly by both Greek and Albanian Prime Ministers Alexis Tsipras and Edi Rama, despite the lack of information on the negotiators and the non-functionality of Albania’s Constitutional Court under the ongoing justice reform process.

The functionality of a Constitutional Court is particularly important concerning the maritime border deal, since the previous one – negotiated by then ruling Democratic Party and former Prime Minister Sali Berisha – was rendered useless by Albania’s Constitutional Court for violating the country’s interests and the constitution.

In context of Albania’s frozen Constitutional Court under the lack of judges and prosecutors, President Ilir Meta had stated that no agreement would be decreed on his side without a court, only to have Rama disagree about its necessity in ratifying the deal.

However, Rama and the Socialist government have had to face many challenges in addition to the Constitutional Court freeze, including the massive university student protests last December which forced him to reshuffle a big part of his government cabinet, among whom Bushati, and the opposition protests which have, as of late, left the parliament without a functioning opposition.

However, asked concerning the division of territorial waters between the countries, Katrougalos said this is the one issue that will be finalized despite the progress of negotiations, as confirmed by Tsipras himself, part of a similar negotiation that will take place with Italy and Egypt as well.

A Facebook user with the name Brenton Tarrant – the man who reportedly killed dozens of people in a terror attack on two mosques in Christchurch on Friday morning – posted pictures of Balkan nationalist symbols online and a statement criticising US involvement in Kosovo.

A video also showed that before the shooting, the gunman played a song honouring Bosnian Serb wartime political leader Radovan Karadzic, whose final verdict for genocide and war crimes is due to be delivered next week.

9:01 AM - Mar 15, 2019

Ahead of the killings, the user of the Brenton Tarrant account posted a 73-page ‘manifesto’ which said the motive for the attack was to “create fear”, and included anti-migrant hate speech, calls for killings of Muslims, and white supremacist rhetoric.

The text also contained a section about the Kosovo conflict.

“Balkanization will also reduce the USA’s ability to project power globally, and thereby ensure that never again can such a situation as the US involvement in Kosovo ever occur again (where US/NATO forces fought beside Muslims and slaughtered Christian Europeans attempting to remove there Islamic occupiers from Europe),” it said.

NATO has been leading peacekeeping operations in Kosovo since June 1999 after its campaign of air strikes to end Serbia’s military campaign against ethnic Albanian rebels.

Pictures showing weaponry used in the shooting were also marked with the name of Montenegrin military leader Marko Miljanov Popovic, who led his tribe in the fight against the Ottoman Empire.

BOSTON – The organizers of the Greek Parade in Boston, in an official announcement, have declared that Greek government officials are not welcome at this year’s parade in commemoration of the liberation of Greece from four hundred years of Turkish occupation. The parade will take place on Sunday, April 7 at 1PM.

The Federation of Hellenic-American Societies of New England under the presidency of Vasilios Bill Kafkas recently held its second general meeting at the Maliotis Cultural Center in Brookline. The Federation is in charge of the parade’s organization in cooperation with the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Boston and the Consulate General of Greece in Boston.

The Metropolis of Boston was once again absent. Metropolitan Methodios never participates in the meetings for the organization of the parade. Sometimes he sends a priest to represent him, but this time no clergy was present to even offer the prayer despite the fact that Methodios had been informed and invited. The Federation has also sent packages with parade materials to all the parishes. The prayer was offered by all those present at the meeting.

Anna Kosmidou, an official of the Consulate General of Greece in Boston represented Consul General of Greece Stratos Efthimiou, who was in Greece.

Federation President Vasilios Kafkas welcomed the delegates and announced the efforts that are under way for the success of this year’s parade.

He again announced that this year there will be a change in the usual program regarding the celebration at the Massachusetts State House. In the past it was held the Friday before the parade, but this year due to the fact that no rooms are available on April 5, the celebration will take place on Friday, March 29 at 12 noon. He also announced that the annual reception at the Consulate General of Greece will take place on Friday April 5 at 6 PM.

The annual Gala Dinner of the parade will take place on Saturday, April 6 at the community center of the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of Boston located at 165 Goddard Avenue in Brookline, MA. The ticket cost per person has been set at $100 dollars.

The memory of Kostas Katsifas, who was killed on October 28 by Albanian police in Northern Epirus will be honored and the Freedom Award will be given to the Paideia organization established by Elias Tomazos in Connecticut, which established and built the facilities of the Center for Hellenic Studies “Paideia” at the University of Connecticut.

Five scholarships will be given to Greek-American students at the Gala Dinner to Greek-American college students. The National Herald will also sponsor a $1,000 scholarship for a student who will be chosen by the Federation according to its rules.
The company that makes the floats will create four of five for the Federation this year, and each association may order its own if it wishes to have a float.

After the parade the Cultural event with traditional Greek dances will follow in the Boston Common Park. Six dance groups will participate.

It was also announced that the Greek School pupils will write an essay on the centennial anniversary of the Pontian genocide by the Turks. The best essay will be read at the State House during the celebration on March 29.

Representatives of the Federation will be visiting various states and cities of New England to inform the local Greek-American communities about the parade and the related activities and to distribute parade material.

The next general meeting for the parade will take place on Wednesday March 27 at 7:30 PM at the Maliotis Cultural Center in Brookline. Link

Albanians preparing to invade Trepca, KFOR knows it?

Kosovo authorities plan to have special police units storm in and take over the Trepca (mining complex) plant in the north of Kosovo and Metohija.

SOURCE: TANJUG WEDNESDAY, MARCH 13, 2019 | 09:46

That is according to a report in Belgrade-based daily Blic, carried by Tanjug on Wednesday.

The daily said that Kosovo Albanians would in that infiltrate into the majority Serb part (of Kosovo).

A source from diplomatic circles in Pristina told Blic that KFOR has knowledge of these preparations, and does not rule out the possibility of Kosovo institutions embarking on such an action.

The unnamed source is further quoted as stating that implementation this campaign - and whether it will happen at all - also directly depends on the internal political developments in Pristina, but also on decisions of "broader political developments around Kosovo."

"However, the basics and the intention for the operation exists," said the source.

Earlier, Pristina passed a law on Trepca and its statute, as for this reason the Kosovo institutions consider Trepca as their property "based on Kosovo laws," writes Blic.

Albania opposition leader: The Commission is ignoring the reality on the ground

Lulzim Basha, the head of the main opposition Democratic Party of Albania (EPP-affiliated), accused the European Commission of being too lenient with the government in place “for the sake of stability”.

“Brussels has chosen to focus on the technical process of law harmonisation for the sake of stability to the cost of democracy […] this has been misused by autocratic leaders in the Balkans, who are now endangering stability because of corruption, collusion with the organised crime and state capture,” Basha told EURACTIV.com in a telephone interview.

The centre-right politician (European People’s Party-EPP) said the judicial reforms put forward by the ruling socialist government of Edi Rama have changed nothing, considering the continuing impunity of politicians and organised crime bosses.

“There have been two justice standards for a long time: one for normal people and one for the powerful,” Basha said of Albania.

“We are the only country in the world whose Constitutional Court has been defunct for one year […] Albania today is in a situation where there is no justice,” he added.

However, Prime Minister Rama’s ruling Socialist Party has been praised by the European Commission and the European Parliament for the judicial reforms. Both EU institutions have called on the EU Council to open the EU negotiations for the Balkan country.

On the other hand, Basha’s party has backed a series of protests against Rama and demanded his resignation. The centre-right party also boycotts the Albanian parliamentary sessions, but this was recently criticised by the EU executive.

EU spokesperson Maja Kocijancic said last month that boycotting the parliament was “damaging and goes against the country’s efforts” to join the EU.

Albania's opposition MPs to resign in protest
Albania’s centre-right opposition said Monday (18 February) its MPs would resign from parliament, the latest in a series of dramatic protests against Prime Minister Edi Rama, who they accuse of corruption.

Basha, who was also a former mayor of Tirana, hinted that the European Commission is ignoring the reality on the ground.

“There’s a discrepancy on what is happening in Albania between reports from European and international agencies,” he said.

He noted that while reports from international organisations, such as Transparency International or the US State Department, point out the deep problems of crime, drugs and state capture, there are public statements from Brussels that overlook these problems altogether.

“So democracy has been sacrificed to keep the stability and now we lack both. This must be a lesson for the future. The lack of democracy and rule of law leads to instability,” Basha said.

Asked if he was optimistic about opening EU accession negotiations, he replied that process had been delayed due to lack of visible progress. “The last progress report points to corruption and state capture whereas Brussels sometimes speaks in another way. This congratulatory rhetoric used for the sake of stability has played a negative role.”

Kosovo: No territorial swap

Referring to the ongoing dialogue between Kosovo, where ethnic Albanians are a majority, and Serbia, he said a solution should be found but the territorial swap Belgrade has been pushing for should not take place.

“Any change of borders by swapping ethnic territories is a very dangerous precedent. Societies in the Balkan countries are multi-ethnic and multi-ethnicity should be considered added value and not an obstacle. The idea of fewer ethnic states is inherently dangerous to peace and stability.”

Greece and Prespa Agreement

Basha also spoke about the North Macedonia name change deal between Athens and Skopje, the so-called Prespa Agreement, saying that it’s a historic moment which shows how the region can move forward.

“This agreement is an investment in the future of all citizens of North Macedonia including Albanians by strengthening good neighbourly relations.”

Just before last summer, Tirana and Athens were also negotiating a package deal to settle their own bilateral issues, including the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) between the two countries, the sea zone where a state has exclusive rights on exploration and use of marine resources.

However, the talks have been stalled since then due to divisions between the Albanian government and the presidency, local media reported.

Basha said Greece was a strategic partner for Albania and the Albanian-Greek relations will be his priority.

“These relations are not at their best at the moment and this must change. My aim is to engage in a sincere and productive dialogue to resolve all outstanding issues,” he said, highlighting also the need for an “equitable solution” for the EEZ.

Clarity on Orbán

Asked what stance he would keep at the EPP Congress on 20 March regarding Hungary’s Orbán issue, he said the ultimate objective is to achieve harmony in the EU’s centre-right family through dialogue.

“We are getting informed by all sides. And we also expect steps to be taken within the family that should produce more clarity in the coming hours and days,” he said without elaborating.

Serbia to hold military parade on anniversary of NATO attack

Aleksandar Vucic says the 20th anniversary of the start of NATO's bombing will be marked with a special religious prayer, moleban, and a military parade.

SOURCE: TANJUG TUESDAY, MARCH 12, 2019 | 16:47

"It's been 20 years since NATO's aggression on one sovereign country, which was not guided only by bombs from the air, it was done almost by any means - political, media," the president told RTS on Tuesday.

He pointed out that it was not only a matter "bombing" - because that was just a technical term. Instead what happened was an aggression on a sovereign country, which did not deserve it any way, but suffered terrible sacrifices.

"Serbia, despite the fact that it was not conducting the smartest and the wisest of policies, did nothing to deserve that and is not responsible for NATO's aggression," while the terrible suffering the country faced - "from (killed toddlers) Milica and Sara, to many soldiers and policemen who died only for protecting the law."

"We will (on March 24), in a dignified manner, in the evening ,be in Nis, which was attacked several times, exactly on the anniversary, to address the citizens. It will be a state manifestation, with a moleban that will be led by Patriarch Irinej and the bishops of the Serbian Church," he stressed.

He added that before that, a military parade will be organized in Nis, where citizens will be able to see 1,500 special purpose soldiers, equipped according to the latest standards, eight to ten MiG-29s, and 19 new helicopters.

"Serbia is seriously strengthening, its security, its safety. That is the foundation of further consolidation of our state," Vucic said, adding that the program of building new housing for members of the military, the police, and the BIA will continue, as well as work on increasing their wages.

The president called on the residents of Nis, and those living in the south and south-east of Serbia, to "come and see their army" on the day.

SManalysis
