U.S. Embassy Tirana Seal.

US Embassy warning their citizens to have attention during campaign politic election in Albania

Campaign-Period Activities

U.S. citizens traveling and residing in Albania are reminded that the campaign period for the Sunday, June 23 parliamentary elections has begun.  Public gatherings will increase during the election season, as a normal part of any democratic process.  U.S. citizens should remain vigilant and aware of their surroundings, assess their personal security, avoid public gatherings in connection with the June 23 elections, and to avoid demonstrations both within Tirana and elsewhere in the country.
All public gatherings and demonstrations have the potential to turn confrontational and to escalate into violence.  You should avoid areas of demonstrations, and exercise caution, if in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations.  Large public gatherings can affect all major incoming arteries to the city in which they occur.  Demonstrations in one city have the potential to lead to additional public rallies or demonstrations in other locations around the city and country.
U.S. citizens should to pay attention to the local news media and Albanian government announcements regarding possible election-related disturbances and any additional security measures imposed during the election period.  We encourage U.S. citizens to practice good personal security measures.  If your school or employer has a security or emergency preparedness plan, please be sure to familiarize yourself with its content and otherwise have a plan in place to ensure you and your family’s safety.  Review your personal security plans; remain aware of your surroundings, including local events; and monitor local news stations for updates.  Maintain a high level of vigilance and take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security.
We strongly recommend that U.S. citizens traveling to or residing in Albania enroll in the Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP).  STEP enrollment gives you the latest security updates, and makes it easier for the U.S. Embassy to contact you in an emergency.  If you don’t have Internet access, enroll directly with the U.S. Embassy.
Regularly monitor the State Department's website, where you can find current Travel Warnings, Travel Alerts, and the Worldwide Caution.  Read the Country Specific Information for Albania.  For additional information, refer to “A Safe Trip Abroad.”
