"No EU for Serbia if Kosovo is condition"

BRUS -- Ivica Dačić says he sees "no possibility of the country's progress" toward becoming a candidate for EU membership, if recognizing Kosovo was the condition.

The interior minister and one of Serbia's deputy premier said that "Europe should show more understanding":
"Therefore the question of whether Serbia will be made a candidate is more for them than for the authorities in Serbia."

Speaking while touring a police station in the town of Brus, in southern Serbia, Dačić also noted that "all other regional countries that are facing problems joining the EU" should create "a Balkan council".

This council "would demonstrate our strength", according to the minister.

Dačić addressed the issue of Serbia's failure to become a candidate on Dec. 9 several times during this week, and on Friday he reiterated that Serbia was facing conditions that went contrary to her national interests.
