Zarif, who is 60-years-old and has worked in high-level roles for the United Nations since joining in 1993, succeeds the Italian Lamberto Zannier. Zannier completed his term of office in June 2011.

The UN’s headquarters says that Zarif has extensive experience in diplomatic, international and United Nations affairs.

Within his previous role at the UN, Zarif served as the Director of the Europe and Latin America Division in the Office of Operations, Department of Peacekeeping Operations, in August 2010.

Zarif is the ninth Special Representative of the UN Secretary General to Kosovo, since the end of the war in 1999.
