Instead of ale and cider the Meerkat pub in Swindon – which served the town's Gorse Hill area of the town as a pub best known as the Princess Hotel for many years – was filled with cannabis plants growing, and huge crops of the plants' buds drying in the loft.
An Albanian man found inside, described as the factory's gardener, was arrested for production of a Class B drug, and also entering the country illegally. He was charged and remanded in custody by police in the town.
"On the 1st floor of the derelict public house were four bedrooms and they contained a total of 143 mature cannabis plants, and the loft was full of harvested cannabis drying," said a police spokesman.
"The site has been cleared of all the cannabis plants and associated growing equipment and the property has been handed back over to the landlord.
"If you have any information regarding this cannabis factory, or any other local issues, please do report it via 101 or anonymously through Crimestoppers 0800 555111," he added.
* Ervin Doksani, 31, was jailed for 26 weeks by magistrates after admitting cannabis cultivation
