Debate for Noli's statue

The Orthodox Church of “Apostle Pavel and Saint Asti” has reacted with a public declaration after a status of Fan Noli was placed in Elbasan, and after its refusal in Durres.

The Church declared that the association "Albanian National Nest" interrupted the official talks with the church and the situation that had been created is not decent at all.

“What happened yesterday doesn’t honor his wounderful work for the country and the church, but offends it. The statue of Father Fan Noli should stay in Durres, where it belongs. To realize this we will request cooperation from the local authorities”, declared father Spiro Kostoli.

The Durres Municipality says there has been no official request for placing Noli’s statue in Durres, while 2.5 years ago, they have receievd a request for naming the road in front of the church after Fan Noli, where he held the first mass in Albanian in 10 March 2014.

The Municipality’s commission voted for another name, that of Spiro Puteci.

The association “National Nest” reacted after this declaration and explained: “If they want to answer positively and allow the statue to be placed at the Church’s yard, we will fund and built an even bigger statue for the Mitropolit. The Durres Orthodox Church should not manipulate the public’s opinion with hypocrisy. If they tell us that they accept the statue, we will finance it,”
