Bucharest (dpa) - Ukraine and Romania on Monday signed an agreement to enhance military cooperation, the Romanian Foreign Ministry said.

Romanian Foreign Minister Titus Corlatean and his Ukrainian counterpart Andriy Deshchytsia signed the agreement in Kiev, a few days before the eastern Ukranian region of Crimea holds a vote on joining Russia.

Russian troops took control of Crimea late last month, sparking a standoff over the future of the Black Sea peninsula between Ukraine‘s Western-backed interim leaders and Russia.

Like Ukraine, Romania is a former Soviet state. It joined NATO in 2004.
