Vucic sums up his view of past, and outcome of Kosovo crisis

(Tanjug, file)SManalysis

To get as much as we can, and lose the least we have to, that is what we are fighting for when it comes to Kosovo, under almost impossible conditions.

SOURCE: TANJUG WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 1, 2018 | 11:32

This is what President Aleksandar Vucic said on Wednesday, adding that he "believes we will not get less than what Serbia had been offered."

In an interview with Pink TV, Vucic pointed out that, while at it, "we are not fighting against the Albanians, but against many Western countries who are behind Kosovo's independence, including the United Kingdom."

"Look what Britain is doing via its agent outposts in central Serbia, in Kosovo, in the north of Macedonia," he observed.

Vucic reminded of the sequence of events that had led to Kosovo's independence, including all the moves behind which stood Western countries - the promoters of Kosovo's independence - but also of the fact that the former authorities did not respond to these events, and of how much - even when they did react, mostly with statements - they were "without any plan and ideas, reacting in accordance with internal daily political needs."

Vucic noted "the great nervousness" in the West, in Pristina, but also in Belgrade, where, he said "some people expected a complete collapse of the Kosovo and Metohija policy."

"When those from the (opposition) Alliance for Serbia are asked why, as members of the former government, they put up a border at Jarinje and Brnjak (administrative line checkpoints between northern Kosovo and central Serbia), there are no Albanians there - there is no answer," the president said.

"Everything we get, therefore, will be something, because we don't have anything," he said.

"We have many opponents in the West," Vucic continued. "You saw what the British did and what they are doing, as well as some others through their agent outposts in the Balkans. We are struggling under difficult, almost impossible conditions to get the most out of what we can for our people, and to lose less," he said.

Vucic then explained "the genesis of the Kosovo and Metohija problem" recalling that Serbia in 1999 went to war for Kosovo against 19 of the world's most powerful countries (NATO members), "and through no blame of its own."

"Those 19 countries trampled on all legal principles and norms. I am not one of those ingratiating myself and saying that only (then president) Slobodan Milosevic was to blame. He did not calculate well and did not understand where that conflict was leading us. He is guilty because he should have fought to have good airplanes and tanks. But, he is not guilty of aggression, instead those who carried it out are. As a result of that aggression, we got the Kumanovo Agreement and (UN Security Council) Resolution 1244," he said.

Vucic added that this resolution "does not speak of Serbia, and the Albanians are mentioned more often than the Serbs."

"This document mentions the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (made up of Serbia and Montenegro), and in 2006, thanks to the irresponsibility of those then in power - I do not want to speak about the interests of those who led Montenegro - we let those who were in favor of a common state with Serbia not to win in the (Montenegrin independence) referendum, because we were not seriously dealing with anything, since we had a cohabitation authorities that were fighting among themselves," he criticized.

Vucic said that in 2004, a pogrom against the Serbs occurred (in Kosovo), when our citizens and holy places were targeted -" while the state did not react in any way, except with press releases."

Then, in 2008 - "although international circles, who were unfair to Serbia, and who were saying 'standards before the status' all the time - switched to 'forget about standards, we'll never fulfill them, let's go for status' - and the Albanians moved to self-declare their own independence."

"To that, we react largely irresponsibly, without seriousness, or strength, without ideas, as if surprised, in accordance with internal needs, because some wanted to protect something, others to remain in power, instead of jointly standing up. That cost us a great deal," said Vucic.

He also recalled that in 2010, Serbia went before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to ask whether the unilateral declaration of independence of Kosovo and Metohija was carried out in a legal way.

"We did not seek arbitration by experts who are not dependent on their countries, but from the ICJ where judges are representatives of their countries," he said.

Vucic then mentioned that a few days ago the anniversary was marked of the murder of 14 Serb farmers in Staro Gracko, in Kosovo, and that the Albanian press did not report about it - "but they praised (Vuk) Jeremic on the anniversary of the decision of the ICJ, and in addition, represented me as Satan."

"I am Satan and the devil - even though I have not said a single ugly word about the Albanians - just because I'm trying to, together with (Marko) Djuric and the government, pull something from the abyss for the Serb people that would not be degrading, which would save face, our people - because if the trend continues in 15 years we will not have Serbs in Kosovo and Metohija - (we're trying) to get more than what was in Ahtisaari's plan," he explained.

"In these conditions, we are trying to get as much as possible for Serbia and the Serbs, to break the viscous cycle of conflict," he said.

Vucic stressed that he was "fighting to preserve peace for our children" and that he has been doing this "for the past six years - and this is respected in the international community, but only here it isn't respected, it's taken as done deal and cowardice."

Kosovo and Metohija Office Director Marko Djuric spoke on Monday morning for Prva TV about the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina.

SOURCE: B92, PRVA TV MONDAY, JULY 30, 2018 | 11:32

"Most Western countries think that the issue of Kosovo is a rounded off story. We are talking both with the Russians and with the Americans and with the Chinese and with everyone who has the idea of a compromise solution," said Djuric.

He added that there is still no solution for the issue of Kosovo, and that when one is in sight, "the citizens of Serbia will be informed about it."

"For me as a citizen and the director of the KiM (Kosovo and Metohija) Office, the most important thing is that we chose to jointly decide on the issue of Kosovo. At the moment we do not have any offers, but once we do the citizens will be informed. Any solution we'll have, we will share with the citizens," Djuric said.

"I notice that the Albanians are nervous, they still think they live in 1999. That pressure can be put on Serbia - yet the situation has changed dramatically,"he said."

"There are many fights and conflicts between Thaci and Haradinaj. For 18 years they have had under control of a part of our territory. They administer Kosovo in a clan-like fashion, they divided up parts of our southern province in a feudal manner. They rely on ingratiating themselves to the international community in order to keep that control," said Djuric.

US now openly supports compromise solution for Kosovo - FM

(Tanjug, file)SManalysis

Serbian Foreign Minister Ivica Dacic has assessed that the US administration "openly supports a compromise solution to the Kosovo problem."

SOURCE: BETA FRIDAY, JULY 27, 2018 | 11:23

Speaking in Washington after meetings with senior US officials, Dacic said that Serbia should "seize the moment."

"Now the (US) administration is ready to, at least, talk equally about our proposals for resolving the biggest probles in the region, which is definitely a lasting solution to the problem of Kosovo and Metohija. Today, there is open support for a compromise solution that is very positive and stimulating for Serbi , as an opportunity to reach a solution in the interests of all parties," Beta agency quoted Dacic as saying, citing a press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Friday.

The head of the Serbian diplomacy was on a two-day visit to the United States where he attended a ministerial conference dedicated to religious freedoms and a ceremony to mark the 100th anniversary of the raising of the Serbian flag at the White House - US President Woodrow Wilson's gesture meant to honor Serbia's sacrifice in the First World War.

Dacic said today that the new US administration of President Donald Trump created a "more favorable atmosphere" for expressing Serbia's stances and that there is a "greater understanding" of the position of Belgrade, as well as "a desire to reset relations between the two countries", the ministry said.

Dacic said that the talks he had with US National Security Adviser John Bolton and assistant US Secretary of State for Europe and Eurasia Wess Mitchell had been "very constructive" and "passed in a very positive atmosphere."

He added that Bolton told him the Trump administration believes the US policy towards the Balkans thus far had been "on autopilot - a policy that was defined 20-30 years ago."

"We will continue our contacts, I repeat, with great US support for the dialogue. It's a big change, because until two years ago when you spoke with American institutions you could only hear that the (Kosovo) issue had been resolved," Dacic said.

He assessed that his visit to the United States was "very significant, with good results for Serbia" as well as "a great opportunity to talk about resetting and revitalizing relations between Washington and Belgrade," the statement added.

Dacic said that he conveyed to President Aleksandar Vucic his impressions from the United States - that the situation was now "significantly different compared to some previous times" and that Serbia should seize that moment to come up with a solution to problems in the region together with the US administration, and to "reaffirm its foreign policy position."

"Therefore, to solve the problems in the region in a way where everyone will gain, without looking for who will lose something. That is a big change," said Dacic.

Gazeta Express:«Ο Τραμπ διαιρεί το Κοσσυφοπέδιο»

SManalysis

Echedoros

Τώρα κανείς δεν ξέρει τι θα συμβεί αν αγγιχτούν τα σύνορα του Κοσσυφοπεδίου. Τι θα συμβεί με την πΓΔΜ και τη Βοσνία;

Glenn Carle, who retired from the CIA in 2007 as Deputy National Intelligence Officer for Transnational Threats, answers questions from the audience after delivering his keynote address,

Early in his career, Glenn Carle had a stint as a Wall Street banker. It seemed staid. He looked around and landed a job at the CIA, where he spent 23 years until retiring in 2007.

Most of his time was spent as a spy on four continents. He became adept at persuading citizens of other nations to commit treason on behalf of the United States.

After the Sept. 11 attack, he was the overseas interrogator of an al-Qaida suspect. He wrote about the experience in his book "The Interrogator."

Earlier, when a congressional committee criticized the CIA for poor leadership, Carle was assigned to help develop a leadership training program for the Agency's vast bureaucracy.

Now, Carle, who lives near Boston, writes a regular column for the Japanese edition of Newsweek, and he's a commentator on a television network in India. He's paid to speak about leadership lessons he learned.

"Leadership is not the 'man on horseback' or the steely-eyed CEO," Carle says in his speaker's bio.

Instead, says Carle: "Leadership is, at heart, a collegial enterprise in which being a peer and teammate is more important than taking the point, or knowing more, or being more decisive and hard-charging than anyone else."

This summer, he gave the keynote speech, "Leadership Lessons from a Spymaster," for the NY Tech Summit in a packed auditorium at Turning Stone Resort Casino.

Tell me about attributes of leadership.

If you're a great car salesman, that's good, but that doesn't make you a good manager of the dealership. And if you're a good spy, it doesn't have a whole lot to do with being a good manager or leader.

Skills are important to know, and I think one needs to have knowledge of the profession that one is leading, but that's secondary to being a good leader.

I'll tell you about leadership by telling a story about pizza and a brush pass with an asset, a clandestine act in a fraction of a second in the public space.

I was overseas, and I was meeting an asset, which is what we call a spy. I was handling this case. Were it known that he were meeting with me and if it were suspected that he were a spy, he probably would have been killed. So it had to be clandestine.

I had documents to give him and he to me. We couldn't sit down and say, here it is. We had to arrange at, say, 8:34 p.m. and 30 seconds that I would be turning right on the southwest corner of Fifth and Main. And as I came around the corner, he would be turning left. And as we walked past each other, we would quickly exchange something in the jostle of the public place. An unnoticeable act, because it happens dozens of times a day to all of us in day-to-day life.

This was a sexy, high-profile case. It had attention at the seventh floor, which is our leadership in the CIA. So, your name would be in the spotlight if things went well, or if things didn't.

The day before the meeting, my superior called me into his office. He said: Glenn, you arranged the meeting. That's great. I'm going to do the meeting, the brush pass. You can stand down, and I'll take your place.

I argued that it was my case. I had the relationship. I was, so far as we could tell, unknown to the other relevant countries' services. My boss was prominent and had people following him all the time. So, it would be life threatening to this fellow if he took my place.

I was appalled. It was an egregious breach of security, an assertion of ego at the expense of professionalism. It was dangerous, insulting, and unprofessional. He wanted some glory.

But he's ordered me to stand down. We are a quasi-military institution, hierarchical. The chain of command is powerful.

I was so concerned I decided to go around the chain of command. I spoke to this man's deputy. I took him aside and said: This is quite delicate and I'm taking a risk in talking to you, but here is what just happened. So and so is replacing me for the meeting, and I think this is an awful idea.

What happened?

He listened and said: The conversation didn't occur Glenn. I'll take care of this.

He spoke to the individual and said: You know, I've been thinking about this operation. It's quite sensitive. It would be a disaster if somehow it were to go wrong. Glenn's operational plan is sound. We wouldn't want anyone with a higher operational presence to be anywhere near this. I would understand if you were interested in being involved in it on a personal level. I'm sure you are not considering that.

In the end, I had the brush-pass meeting.

And the leadership story about pizza?

I was in the secretary's office, just outside of the director's office, waiting to speak to him. There was a young intern doing something, nothing particularly consequential.

The director, George Tenet, stepped out, and he said to the secretary: I'm going to get a sandwich. I'm hungry. I'll be back in a few minutes.

He made a general solicitation as he steps toward the door: Does anyone want anything?

This intern said: Oh! You're going to the cafeteria? Sure. Bring me some pizza.

This young woman had no idea she had just told the director of the CIA to get her a pizza.

So everyone sort of stopped, frozen, with a half smile for a heartbeat and then Tenet said: OK, sure. What kind of pizza do you want?

She wanted pepperoni or something.

Ten minutes later he came back, handed her the pizza, and she said: Great. Thank you very much.

The first story about the brush-pass was catastrophically bad judgment, but also bad leadership. The second, although inconsequential in a professional sense, was a characteristic example of how, I think, George Tenet was an outstanding leader.

The CIA, although our job is espionage, is no different than the small companies I have worked for a couple times in my life or the large bank early in my career.

The issue comes down not to skills, but attributes and behaviors. The skills of espionage are precise, the skills of the bank where I worked are precise. And they're all relevant but I think secondary in leadership. What counts are the attributes that one has, who one is as a person.

What are the qualities of a good leader and good leadership?

I don't like people who are imperious. So they should be collegial.

Let me put it positively: Collegiality. Openness. Empathy. And ability to thrive in ambiguity, where there is no clear answer, and yet to make clear decisions because they must be made. Which is an impossible task, but that's the job.

Bannon plans Europe-wide populist campaign

SManalysis

Steve Bannon in Prague in May 2018: Steve Bannon has been taking his message around Europe. Here he is addressing a debate in Prague© Getty Images Steve Bannon has been taking his message around Europe. Here he is addressing a debate in Prague  Populists and right-wingers have a grip on power in Italy, Hungary and Austria, and now Donald Trump's one-time adviser has designs on increasing their spread across Europe.

Steve Bannon dreams of a right-wing "supergroup" gaining a populist foothold in the European Parliament after next year's European elections.

But his plans have provoked a sharp response from across the political spectrum.

While one German minister attacked Steve Bannon's "hatred and lies", some populist figures in Europe were unimpressed with the idea of an American vowing publicly to unite them from a Brussels headquarters.

What's Bannon planning?

The former chief Trump strategist travelled to Europe after he was pushed out of the White House and then departed the right-wing Breitbart media empire. His ambition now is a populist implosion across the Continent.

Everything started with the Brexit vote in June 2016, he believes. It continued with the election of President Trump the following November and returned to Europe with the success of two populist parties in Italy's election last March.

Italy is "in the vanguard of change in Europe", he argues, and along with Hungary's Viktor Orban is proof that the message from Europe's citizens is that people "want their countries back".

The next step, Mr Bannon has revealed, is for a non-profit foundation called The Movement to be set up in a Brussels office and recruit staff to help advise on messaging and targeting of data.

If it sounds reminiscent of Cambridge Analytica's use of data and Facebook to attract US voters, Mr Bannon was on the company's board of directors.

Raheem Kassam, a former aide to UKIP ex-leader Nigel Farage now signed up to the Bannon cause, calls the Brussels plan "a clearing house for the populist, nationalist movement in Europe", according to Reuters news agency. "We have started to staff up," he said, highlighting the issues of sovereignty, border control and jobs.

Why Bannon sees an opening

The first test is the May 2019 European Parliament vote.

The Movement would challenge the work of philanthropist George Soros, whose Open Society Foundations (OSF) have promoted liberal democracy across Europe for decades.

The difference would be that their organisation would be "on the side of ordinary people", says Mr Kassam.

There is already a template.

Protesters against Viktor Orban's law against NGOs in April 2018: Viktor Orban has been accused by the European Commission of failing to comply with EU law by criminalising support for asylum seekers© Getty Images Viktor Orban has been accused by the European Commission of failing to comply with EU law by criminalising support for asylum seekers  Hungary's self-styled proponent of "illiberal democracy", Mr Orban has already pushed the OSF out of Hungary and criminalised support for asylum seekers. He is someone Mr Bannon identifies as "Trump before Trump" as well as as "real patriot and a real hero".

In a speech in Budapest in May, Mr Bannon said Europe's "populist, nationalist revolt" was some 18 months to two years ahead of the US, because of the work of Mr Farage, Mr Orban and the leaders of Italy's ruling parties, The League and the Five Star Movement.

He has claimed credit for bringing the two Italian parties together a few days after the March vote.

Matteo Salvini in Rome on 25 June: Matteo Salvini's role in Italy's populist-led government has highlighted Europe's disagreements on migration© Getty Images Matteo Salvini's role in Italy's populist-led government has highlighted Europe's disagreements on migration  In France too he has shared the stage with far-right leader Marine Le Pen, who reached the run-off in the 2017 presidential election only to be heavily defeated by Emmanuel Macron.

"Let them call you racist, let them call you xenophobes, let them call you nativist. Wear it as a badge of honour," he said to her supporters.

While her party, renamed National Rally, has had to go cap in hand to Russian banks for funding, Mr Bannon believes he can attract funding that would have an impact on populist movements across the Continent, including the far-right Sweden Democrats and nationalist Finns party.

The Sweden Democrats are eyeing their best performance yet in September elections, with recent opinion polls suggesting their level of support is above 18%.

And it would not cost much. Brexit was built on a small sum while Italy's populists used their own credit cards, he says.

How is his message going down?

The reception so far has been hostile, or at best cool, for Mr Bannon's drive for populist unity.

Germany's centre-left Europe Minister Michael Roth said Europeans should not be afraid of "nationalist campaigns with which Mr Bannon would like to force Europe to its knees. Our values are stronger than his hate and lies".

There were warnings from other German parties too, with the pro-business FDP warning of a "frontal attack on the EU and European values".

Only Alice Weidel of the far-right AfD said Mr Bannon's ideas were "very exciting and ambitious".

Fellow leader Jörg Meuthen has been pretty damning, saying they have "basically no need of coaching from outside the EU".

That is not to say he does not back a united populist right-wing front in Europe against immigration. In 2017, his party hosted a conference with Italy's League, Austria's Freedom Party, France's National Front and Dutch politician Geert Wilders.

A similar message has come from Austrian far-right MEP Harald Vilimsky, whose Freedom Party is already sharing power with Chancellor Sebastian Kurz's conservative People's Party.

"We will continue to work on this without any external influence," said Mr Vilimsky. While he did not rule out some form of co-operation, he said he could only judge if something concrete came from Mr Bannon.

Very little reaction has come from Italy or France, even though Ms Le Pen's partner Louis Aliot has visited Steve Bannon in London in recent weeks.

The reality is that the Italian and Austrian governments have already begun collaborating.

SManalysis

Στην Βόρειο Ήπειρο, όμως, υπάρχει ελληνική εθνική μειονότητα, με την ιστορία, τις εκκλησίες, τα σχολεία και τις περιουσίες της. Επιπλέον, υπάρχει το Πρωτόκολλο της Κέρκυρας του 1914 που αναγνώρισε το αυτόνομο κράτος της Βορείου Ηπείρου, με εγγυήτριες τις μεγάλες δυνάμεις της εποχής και το οποίο καμία ελληνική κυβέρνηση από το τέλος του Β΄ Παγκοσμίου Πολέμου έχει διανοηθεί να απεμπολήσει. Στην αποκαλούμενη Τσαμουριά, τι υπάρχει;

Και, κυρίως, γιατί δεν ζητάει να εφαρμοστεί το διεθνές δίκαιο που προστατεύει τις εθνικές μειονότητες, για τις περιουσίες στην Αλβανία των μελών της ελληνικής μειονότητας; H Αλβανία είναι υπεράνω του διεθνούς δικαίου και της ευρωπαϊκής νομολογίας;

Twin wildfires near Athens kill 20, gut vacation resorts

Greece sought international help through the European Union as the fires on either side of Athens left lines of cars torched, charred farms and forests, and sent hundreds of people racing to beaches to be evacuated by navy vessels, yachts and fishing boats.

Winds reached 80 kph (50 mph) as authorities deployed the country's entire fleet of water-dropping planes and helicopters to give vacationers time to escape. Military drones remained in the air in the high winds to help officials direct more than 600 firefighters below.

"We were unlucky. The wind changed and it came at us with such force that it razed the coastal area in minutes," said Evangelos Bournous, mayor of the port town of Rafina, a sleepy mainland port that serves Greek holiday islands.

The dock area became a makeshift hospital as paramedics checked survivors when they came off coast guard vessels and private boats. The operation continued through the night.

The fire posed no immediate threat to Greece's famed ancient monuments, but as it raged inland children's' summer camps and holiday homes were hastily abandoned. Fleeing drivers clogged highways into Athens, hampering the firefighting effort.

It was the deadliest fire season to hit Greece in more than a decade. More than 60 people were killed in 2007 when huge fires swept across the southern Peloponnese region.

"It's a difficult night for Greece," Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said after flying back to Athens from a trip to Bosnia that was cut short.

Authorities said Cyprus and Spain offered assistance after the request for EU help was made.

Greek Fire Service officials issued public pleas for residents in fire-affected areas to comply with evacuation orders and not stay on in an effort trying to save their homes.

Rafina's mayor said he believed about 100 houses in that area had burned. The fire service was not able to confirm the figure.

Showers that passed over the Greek capital Monday missed the two big fires — one at Rafina, 30 kilometers (18 miles) to the east, and the other at Kineta, 55 kilometers (35 miles) to the west. Heavy rain is forecast across southern Greece on Wednesday.

US ambassador changes tune: Now partition can be discussed

S(EPA-EFE, file, illustration purposes)Manalysis

US Ambassador in Kosovo Greg Delawie said late on Thursday that it was up to Kosovo and Serbia to decide on a possible partition of Kosovo.

SOURCE: BETA FRIDAY, JULY 20, 2018 | 09:18

This statement contradicts the ones he made earlier, when he described partition as a dangerous option.

Delawie was taking part in in the Pristina-based KTV broadcaster's Rubikon show, and did not mention his country's red lines on a partition of Kosovo that he pronounced in December. He also said that US support for Kosovo's independence is "unshakable, and will continue."

Asked whether he was ruling out Kosovo's partition, Delawie replied:

"I am saying that I’m not going to talk about what an element of the final deal will be, I’m not going to talk about who I think should be leading this discussion in Brussels, and I’m not going to talk about ancillary details like what room it should be in or the shape of the table. Especially I think we are getting ahead of the discussion that really needs to take place here, and needs to have more participation from Kosovo’s political parties. Everybody needs to get in the game to talk about these things," he said.

"Kosovo needs to figure out what its goals are, it needs to try to achieve some kind of consensus on those goals, and that is what I am focusing on right now," Delawie also said.

Asked whether there should be red lines from the Kosovo side in the dialogue with Serbia, the US ambassador said:

"I don’t think it’s really helpful for me to talk too much about red lines, it's up to Kosovo to figure out what its goals are. I think Kosovo is facing a unique moment in its history when it can help determine what the future is going to be for Kosovo, for Kosovo's children, and to put aside the nervousness, the tension, the controversy that has characterized the relationship between Kosovo and Serbia these last several years. I think it’s important to focus on how to make the future better for all of Kosovo’s citizens, for Serbia’s citizens as well, and to find out a way to get to this normalization that we’ve been working on for a long time."

Vucic to Haradinaj: There will be no war, but...

(Tanjug, file)SManalysis

President Aleksandar Vucic says he hopes that "it will not come to war" and that "a solution will be found for Kosovo."

SOURCE: TANJUG FRIDAY, JULY 20, 2018 | 15:19

Vucic spoke after Kosovo PM Haradinaj said that a partition of Kosovo, as far as he was concerned, "meant war."

Nevertheless, as the president pointed out, any delays would have negative consequences on other issues.

Vucic said this comment by Haradinaj was "neither the first nor the last" of its kind, and expressed hope that things would never come to war, but instead to some sort of solution.

"Since we can see the statements of Hashim Thaci - it's impossible that you (Pristina) talk and demand everything, and say, 'we are waiting for an answer'.. It's not an agreement if you tell us - everything is ours, and you just recognize us. There will be no agreement there," Vucic said.

He reiterated that reaching a deal was very important. "I know it's hard for people, they prefer nothing to ever be agreed on, to delay, but it cannot be delayed, because on other matters it will be increasingly more difficult and (we will be) in a weaker situation," Vucic said.

He underlined that it was "in our interest to resolve this issue, if possible, and if not - it will be neither the first nor the last attempt to reach an agreement."

Reaching it, he continued, "would be a great thing for the future of Serbia."

"Am I an optimist? I am not, but we will fight and I don't care what those who hackle and cheer for the stone that someone is pushing to the top of the hill will say. I have no fear. I think about the future. I was elected because of that and that is why the people gave me so much support in the elections," Vucic said, referring to his political opponents in Serbia.

Four days after Trump stunned the world by siding with Putin in Helsinki over his intelligence agencies, the president asked national security adviser John Bolton to issue the invitation to the Russian leader, said White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders.

What happened at Monday's one-on-one between Trump and Putin with only interpreters present remained a mystery, even to top officials and U.S. lawmakers who said they had not been briefed.

Trump's director of national intelligence, Dan Coats, said in response to a question at the Aspen Security Forum in Colorado: "Well, you're right, I don't know what happened at that meeting."

The coveted invitation was sure to be seen as a victory by Putin, whose last official visit to the United States was in July 2007, when he spent two days at the Bush family compound.

Both Trump and Putin earlier on Thursday praised their first meeting as a success and blamed forces in the United States for trying to belittle its achievements, Trump citing discussions on counterterrorism, Israel's security, nuclear proliferation, cyber attacks, trade, Ukraine, Middle East peace and North Korea.

In one Twitter post, Trump blamed the media. "The Summit with Russia was a great success, except with the real enemy of the people, the Fake News Media."

In Moscow, Putin said the summit "was successful overall and led to some useful agreements" without elaborating on the agreements.

Top Senate Democrat Chuck Schumer criticized the invitation. "Until we know what happened at that two hour meeting in Helsinki, the president should have no more one-on-one interactions with Putin. In the United States, in Russia, or anywhere else," he said in a statement.

Coats, who on Monday roundly defended the intelligence agencies' findings of Russian meddling, also advised against a one-on-one meeting with Putin, saying he "would look for a different way of doing it."

An official visit by a Russian president to the United States is a rare event: the last time was in June 2010 with Dmitri Medvedev, now Russian prime minister.

A senior White House official said Bolton extended the official invitation to Putin on Thursday via his Russian counterpart. No date has been set and it was unclear whether it would be timed for the U.N. General Assembly in late September.

REJECTION OF PUTIN PROPOSAL

The week was one of the toughest for Trump since he took office 18 months ago as aides struggled with damage control and convincing Americans that the president did not favour Russian interests over his own country's. Forty-two percent of registered voters said they approved of Trump’s overall job performance, according to a Reuters/Ipsos opinion poll taken after the summit.

Bolton on Tuesday laid out four talking points for the crisis-hit White House, according to one official: that Trump stress he supports U.S. intelligence agencies, that there was never any Russian collusion with his campaign, that Russian meddling is unacceptable and the United States is doing everything it can to protect elections in 2018 and beyond.

With Trump under fierce criticism in the United States, the White House on Thursday rejected Putin's proposal that Russian authorities be present for the questioning of Americans it accuses of "illegal activities," including a former U.S. ambassador to Moscow.

It was the latest about-face in a week of multiple reversals. Critics complained that Trump was given ample opportunity at a joint news conference on Monday to scold Putin over Russian interference in the election but instead accepted Putin's denials over the word of American intelligence agencies.

Trump on Tuesday said he misspoke during the news conference. On Wednesday, Trump answered "no" to a reporter's question on whether Russia was still targeting the United States, only to have Sanders say later he was saying "no" to answering any questions - not to the question itself.

Republican and Democratic U.S. lawmakers grappled with Trump's conflicting statements as they discussed ways to show their opposition to what they saw in Helsinki, including strengthening sanctions.

On Monday, Putin described the proposal when he was asked about the possible extradition of 12 Russian intelligence officers indicted in the United States on charges of interfering in the 2016 election by carrying out cyber attacks on Democratic Party networks.

Putin indicated he would permit American law enforcement officials to observe questioning by Russian officials of the indicted Russians and vice versa for Russian investigations. He mentioned London-based financier Bill Browder, a onetime investor in Russia who said he exposed corruption there. Standing alongside Putin, Trump called the idea "an incredible offer."

Sanders on Thursday said, "It is a proposal that was made in sincerity by President Putin, but President Trump disagrees with it," a day after saying the proposal was going to be discussed by Trump's team. "Hopefully President Putin will have the 12 identified Russians come to the United States to prove their innocence or guilt."

Moscow is trying to stop Balkan countries from entering NATO. Greece eventually took measures against Russia, even though Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras had earlier said that Russia was Greece's strategic partner. What caused so much anger in Athens?

Militant Greek atheist Alexis Tsipras betrays his people, Orthodoxy and Russia. 62644.jpeg
The agreement signed on June 17 between Greece and Macedonia (official name - the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia) to rename the country to Northern Macedonia sparked protests in both countries. The Macedonians are strongly opposed to a possibility for "Central Macedonia" - Greece that is - to annex their state some time in the future. The Greeks do not want to transfer the name and historical roots of their homeland to Macedonia. The Greek administration assumed that it was Russia that staged those protests. Athens concluded that Moscow was interfering into its affairs and decided to expel four Russian diplomats (two others were barred from entering Greece).

Maria Zakharova, an official spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, stated soon afterwards that Russia would take adequate measures in response. In return, officials with the Greek Foreign Ministry urged Russia to stop treating Greece with disrespect.

"Statements from the representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry demonstrate typical disrespect for a third country, as well as lack of understanding of the modern world, in which states, regardless of their size, have their independence and can implement independent, democratic and many-sided foreign policies," a message from the Greek Foreign Ministry said.

The phrase "independent policies" does not seem to hold water, as European elites propagate Western values and promote Western policies. The word "democratic" does not seem to fit here either, as democracy implies the fulfillment of the will of the people and strong connection between the power and the people. Seventy percent of the Greeks are opposed to the agreement with Macedonia. Greek officials are only right about "many-sided" foreign policies: sitting between the chairs has been common practice for many leaders of Eastern Europe and the Balkans for long now. They welcome the distribution of Victoria Nuland's bread among "protesters" and the investment of five billion dollars in the "democratization" of Ukraine. If Russia dares to do something like this, they start talking about "interference in internal affairs."

Of course, this is their interpretation of events, but we have ours. Why should we pander to opinions of unrepresentative politicians if NATO is building the belt of chaos around Russia? Russia has the right to use all means of "soft" influence, including measures of support for religious and ethnic feelings of the population through non-governmental organizations. Intelligence services always come in handy as well.

Greece expelled Russian diplomats after the publication of the statement from representatives of all monasteries of Mount Athos. They strongly condemned the initiative to rename Macedonia. The monks called on the Greek parliament to "respect the will of the Greek people and the historical truth." The brotherhood of Athos has a great influence on the Greeks, and Alexis Tsipras is a militant atheist. This is nonsense for the Greek society. Tsipras allowed gay marriage and canceled mandatory prayers at Greek schools.

Greece has always, even during the Cold War, refrained from unfriendly steps against the USSR and Russia. The anti-Russian actions of the Greek administration look all the more strange because Tsipras came to Moscow a few years ago to ask Putin for help during the Greek debt crisis. Many in Russia still remember Tsipras talking about brotherly relations between the two Orthodox nations. What made him come against the will of his own people now? Did someone promise him to write off the Greek debt? Or was it a nice bank account and promises of comfortable retirement?

As Georgy Engelgard, a researcher at the Institute of Slavic Studies, told Pravda.Ru that NATO's prime goal today is to do away with the non-bloc zone in the Balkans. "The expulsion of Russian diplomats from Greece shows how nervous the Greek authorities are about the protests. For almost 30 years, several governments have been raising their people in the fidelity of the state position on the Macedonian issue. A step away from this policy causes serious discontent. The Greek government decided that it would be best to roll over on Russia to reason the protesters," Georgy Engelgard said in an interview with Pravda.Ru.

Macedonian Prime Minister Zoran Zaev announced a referendum on the new constitutional name of Macedonia. The referendum is to be held later this year. In January of 2019, the parliament is to  approve to the Constitution of the country. The Greek parliament will have to ratify the treaty as well before it takes effect.

SManalysis

Echedoros

Echedoros

Daily: Egypt to revoke recognition of Kosovo?

One of the main topics of the visit of Egypt's parliamentary delegation to Belgrade will be the withdrawal of that country's recognition of Kosovo.

SOURCE: VECERNJE NOVOSTI, TANJUG THURSDAY, JULY 19, 2018 | 09:18

Belgrade-based daily Vecernje Novosti is reporting this on Thursday.

The newspaper said it received confirmation from diplomatic circles that there is willingness in Egypt to change the decision to recognize Kosovo, made five years ago - but that the right moment is being awaited.

The article added that Egypt verbally recognized the southern Serbian province as independent on June 26, 2013, while the Muslim brotherhood was still power, but without sending a diplomatic note.

A few days later, political changes took place in Egypt. However, even five years on, Cairo and Pristina have not established diplomatic relations and have not opened embassies.

Vecernje Novosti added in the report that the faction that has always been against the recognition of Kosovo is close to the current Egyptian president ,Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.

"Kosovo round was not easy, we agreed two things"

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic says Wednesday's Belgrade-Pristina talks in Brussels were "very complex."

SOURCE: TANJUG WEDNESDAY, JULY 18, 2018 |

He said that it was agreed they would continue to seek a common denominator of a compromise solution, and to preserve peace and stability in relations between Belgrade and Pristina.

In a brief statement to the press after the meeting, Vucic said that the talks were "certainly not easy and there were two things we agreed on."

The president stated that he would have nothing more to add, "but if I could say in one sentence, it is is that the Albanians and Hashim Thaci would like to get everything and seek everything for Albanians from Kosovo, while Belgrade is trying to find a compromise solution that would not demean either side."

"Of course I am fighting for Serbia and a Serb side where the interests of the other side would not be completely ignored," Vucic said, adding that "the position and the talks are not easy for anyone."

It is important to talk, to preserve peace and solve problems "for the sake of the future, because of the future, and to avoid conflicts like what happened before."

Asked by the journalists whether they he would "accept the independence of Kosovo," Vucic said: "I have precisely this type of conversation on a daily basis - whether we will achieve a compromise, what would be a compromise solution... The only compromise solution offered by all of Kosovo political sides, especially Hashim Thaci and everyone else, is always the recognition of an independent state of Kosovo. That's not how it works."

We must, he added, sit down and try to each tell our citizens that we need to reach a compromise on many important issues.

"You cannot be absolutely satisfied, and neither can we be absolutely satisfied. If both sides are equally dissatisfied, that would mean that we can reach a compromise solution," Vucic said.

When a reporter remarked that the previous meeting in Brussels also resulted in an agreement to solve problems in a peaceful manner - but since there had been several incidents (in Kosovo) - Vucic said that this was discussed too, and that "some kind of technical steps have been undertaken today to prevents it in the future."

He stressed that his job was to take care of the safety of the Serbs and preserve their security. When asked what further steps he expects regarding the dialogue, Vucic said, "the question is difficult, and the answer even more complicated for the simple reason that the situation is such, and because this is a problem that has existed for 150 years and more in different ways."

"But do you have the right to break off the conversations and leave everything to be solved by emotions and passions, and taken over by them - I do not think you have any right to do that. That is why Serbia is determined to continue the talks and when they are scheduled, we will continue these talks in good faith and with best intent to reach a solution," said the president, adding, "As to whether we reach a solution... whether we can offer some sort of solution to our societies, that we will see - we are not close to that."

EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Federica Mogherini and the presidents of Serbia and Kosovo, Aleksandar Vucic and Hashim Thaci, on Wednesday in Brussels discussed the progress in the talks on the frameworks for a legally binding agreement on normalization of relations.

Echedoros

US Intelligence Chief: ‘The Warning Lights are Blinking Red Again’ on Cyberattacks

Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats raised the alarm on growing cyberattack threats against the United States, saying the situation is at a “critical point” and coming out forcefully against Russia.

“The warning signs are there. The system is blinking. It is why I believe we are at a critical point,” Coats said, addressing the Hudson Institute in Washington, DC, on Friday.

“Today, the digital infrastructure that serves this country is literally under attack,” he said.

Coats compared the “warning signs” to those the United States faced ahead of the September 11 terrorist attacks.

“It was in the months prior to September 2001 when, according to then-CIA Director George Tenet, the system is blinking red. And here we are nearly two decades later, and I’m here to say, the warning lights are blinking red again,” Coats said.

Coats said the “worst offenders” are Russia, China, Iran and North Korea — with Russia the “most aggressive foreign actor, no question. And they continue their efforts to undermine our democracy.”

Every day, those countries “are penetrating our digital infrastructure and conducting a range of cyber intrusions and attacks against targets in the United States,” he said.

Some of their targets include the federal government, the US military, state and local governments, and US businesses, he said.

Coats’ comments came the same day that the Justice Department announced the indictment of 12 Russian military intelligence agents, accusing them of engaging in a “sustained effort” to hack Democrats’ emails and computer networks during the 2016 election.

Coats referred to the indictments and alluded to upcoming election threats, but said “focusing on the potential impact of these actions, on our midterm election, misses the more important point: These actions are persistent, they’re pervasive, and they are meant to undermine America’s democracy on a daily basis, regardless of whether it is election time or not. Russia actors and others are exploring vulnerabilities in our critical infrastructure as well.”

Coats added, “What’s serious about the Russians is their intent. They have capabilities, but it’s their intent to undermine our basic values, undermine democracy, create wedges between us and our allies.”

John Podesta, the former chairman of Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign, reacted to the warning on Saturday, telling CNN’s Ana Cabrera, “as the director of national intelligence said, the red lights are blinking, but I think the White House is essentially asleep at the switch.”

In his remarks, Coats pointed to the indictment as showing “exactly what they’re trying to do or what they’ve done through their military intelligence relative to elections.”

So far, he said, the United States is “not yet seeing the kind of electoral interference in specific states and in voter databases that we experienced in 2016” by the Kremlin.

“However, we fully realize that we are just one click of the keyboard away from a similar situation repeating itself,” he warned.

Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, like other officials in her department, made a similar assessment that Russia has not yet targeted the 2018 midterm elections with a “scale or scope” of their influence campaign in the 2016 presidential election. But Nielsen noted on Saturday during a conference in Philadelphia that the intelligence community has observed “persistent Russian efforts using social media.”

Coats said Friday that intelligence officials have seen “aggressive attempts to manipulate social media and to spread propaganda focused on hot-button issues that are intended to exacerbate social, political divisions.”

Trump is meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin one-on-one in Helsinki, Finland, on Monday. Trump said he intends to raise the 2016 election meddling during his discussion with Putin.

While Coats will not be sitting down with Putin, he was asked Friday what his message to Putin would be if he was given the chance to speak with the Russian leader.

“My message would be: We know what you’re doing, and we know you know what you’re doing and what we’re doing. If your goal is to strengthen Russia in the proper way, we can cooperate with you,” he said, later adding, “But if you want to stay in this tit-for-tat, we’re going to beat you.”
