Kammenos and U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis to Meet This Week in Washington DC
By Kerry Kolasa-Sikiaridi - Mar 21, 2017
This coming Thursday or Friday Greece’s Defense Minister, Panos Kammenos, will hold a meeting with his U.S. counterpart, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis in Washington, DC.
The meeting not only coincides with the national Greek holiday of March 25, but also is in efforts to build strong bilateral military ties between the two countries as Turkey has recently stepped up its irredentist rhetoric to include threats of recreating the massacre of Greeks over land which they believe belongs to Turkey.
There will be the customary series of events welcoming Kammenos in DC, including a dinner at the Blair House which will be hosted by Greek-American White house Chief of Staff Reince Priebus. Others in attendance will be prominent figures from the Greek-American community as well as Cyprus’ government spokesman, Nikos Christodoulides.
The meeting taking place is also to benefit the U.S., as they are looking at re-strategizing their military plans in the Eastern Mediterranean region under their newly elected president, sources have reported.
