Visit of Admiral Zambellas to Albania

13 November 2012
The Admiral’s visit is aimed at strengthening defence relations with the UK’s newest NATO partner, particularly through joint training exercises.
Admiral Sir George Zambellas, Commander of the British Fleet and Deputy Chief of the Naval Staff, visited Albania today, in a historic visit between the two countries. Admiral Zambellas is the most senior British military officer ever to visit Albania. The Admiral met President Nishani and the Minister of Defence, Mr Imami. He will also meet Prime Minister Berisha and the Chief of the Defence Staff later in his visit.

The Admiral’s visit is aimed at strengthening defence relations with the UK’s newest NATO partner, particularly through joint training exercises. This co-operation is of value to both countries, particularly as Albania provides some training opportunities not available to British troops in the United Kingdom. Admiral Zambellas will also explore further opportunities to widen and deepen defence relations between Albania and the United Kingdom in several areas.
As part of his visit, Admiral Zambellas will also visit a joint exercise currently being held in Albania. Exercise Albanian Lion is the largest military exercise ever held between the two countries. It involves four major British warships, and thousands of British and Albanian troops, and will include both naval and land-based activity. It is designed to exercise the UK’s Response Force Task Group, a rapid response force held in readiness to react flexibly to a range of crises and world events.
