"No positive signals for EU candidate status"

The Presidential election was an important test for Albania, and now we have a president without the approval of the opposition. It respects the law, but not the Constitutional spirit.

From Brussels, Peter Stano, spokesperson of the EU Commissioner for integration, Stefan Fule, answered to the questions of Top Channel’s correspondent, Arta Tozaj.

TCH – Did Albania’s fail its recent test, and is this a lost chance?

Stano – “We followed the Presidential Election closely, and we keep following the political situation in Albania.

TCH – Will this process affect the Commission’s evaluation in autumn, and is Albania today closer to the EU?

Stano – As you know, we will give our evaluation on October, but I can say that it is difficult to see positive signals and positive moments that would bring the country, the political leaders and the people closer to the next integration process”.

TCH – Eduard Kukan, from the European Parliament, considered this a lost chance. This election did not help overcoming the divisions between the political parties in Albania. Do you think that this is a lost chance?

Stano – “It is not up to me to comment the declaration of the Chairman of the European Parliament for the relations with Albania, but I think that his declaration speaks very clearly, and I spoke very clearly about the process, and I would add nothing more.
