The
Greek economy and the eurozone will be the main topics of the
conference by the Brookings Institution, to be held on Thursday, April
16, 2015 in Washington, with Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis being the keynote speaker in the thematic table on "The Greek economy and its global partners."
Later he is expected to meet the US President Barack Obama.
German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble will also be a keynote speaker in the thematic table on "The eurozone at a crossroads (again)."
The unit in which the Greek minister will participate will touch upon the challenges facing the Greek economy, the prospects for reforms and economic recovery and the details of a possible future strategic agreement between Greece, its European partners and the IMF.
After his speech, Varoufakis will have a brief discussion with economist and former finance minister of Turkey Kemal Dervis as well as David Wessel, an executive at the Brookings Institution.
Varoufakis is also expected at the White House on Thursday to attend celebrations for the March 25th Greek Independence Day celebrations, becoming the first official of the recently elected Greek government to meet with the US President Barack Obama.
According to sources the Greek finance minister will have a few moments to talk with Obama and US Vice President Joe Biden at a time when Greece is in crucial negotiations with its international creditors.
