A very tall flag-bearing man marching in the center of Athens streets was none other than Giannis Antetokounmpo, as he walked with young athletes on March 25, 2013.
Atetokounmpo has returned to his native country to celebrate the anniversary of the Greek revolution against the Ottoman Empire.
Antetokounmpo, the son of immigrants from Nigeria who was born in Athens, Greece on December 6, 1994, is seen leading the parade of the youth squad of the Filathlitikos athletic club in the Greek capital’s Zografou neighborhood.
The “Greek Freak” spent the 2011–12 season with the senior Filathlitikos team, in Greece’s third-tier level semi-pro basketball league, the Greek Third Division. He then began his professional level career with Filathlitikos, in Greece’s second-tier level basketball league, the Greek A2 League, during the 2012–13 season.
Antetokounmpo, who announced in February that he will play for Greece at this summer’s FIBA Basketball World Cup, in a recent interview he said he is not prepared to “Americanize” in order to become the NBA’s prime representative.
