Spain’s Podemos first in opinion poll
First entry: 8 February 2015
February’s Metroscopia poll for El País, published on Sunday, awards Podemos first
place in Spanish politics for the third time in four months, and the
second month in a row, although with a slightly lower percentage of the
estimated vote (27.7%) than in January (28.2%).
Mariano Rajoy’s governing Popular Party increases its share slightly to 20.9%, from 19.2% in January and recover to second place, after previously being ranked third for three months.
At the last general election, in November 2011, the party won 44.6% of the vote.
The Spanish Socialist Party (PSOE) has lost another five percentage points, falling to 18.3% this month from 23.5% in January.
Pedro Sánchez’s party has now lost nearly ten percentage points of support in the last two months, having scored 27.7% in December.
At the last general election, the party won 28.7% of the vote.
The Metroscopia results—Podemos first, PP second, PSOE third—reflect the results of the “direct voting intention” component of the survey released by Spain’s Sociological Research Centre (CIS).
In an editorial, El País wrote that there were “no solid signs” of any party being able to win a majority at the next election: “Citizens are looking for solutions and are not able to find them. The Metroscopia poll for El País published today confirms the deterioration of the traditional party system and the search for trustworthy options”.
