TIRANA (Albania), March 25 (SeeNews) - The European Union has committed to providing up to 50 million euro to Albania to help the country fight the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and its impact on the economy, the EU ambassador to Albania, Luigi Soreca, said.
The financial assistance will include four million euro for immediate equipment and health support, 11 million euro for social protection and up to 35 million euro for economic recovery, Soreca said in a Twitter post on Tuesday.
"A valuable help in the main battle to protect the health of our citizens," Albania's president, Ilir Meta, said on the same social network later the same day.
Albania has so far confirmed 123 coronavirus cases, with the death toll rising to five, local news portal Exit.al reported on Tuesday.
The EU leaders agreed earlier on Tuesday to open accession talks with Albania and North Macedonia. The European Council granted the status of EU candidate to Albania in 2014.
