Draft Bill on Acquisition of Greek Nationality by Second-Generation Migrants Passed in Principle

Parliamentary committees

by A. Makris - Jun 11, 2015

Parliamentary committeesAn Interior Ministry bill modifying Greece’s laws on acquiring Greek nationality was passed in principle. The bill affects the rights to Greek nationality of children that are second-generation migrants.

The draft bill was supported by the ruling SYRIZA/ANEL coalition, “To Potami” and PASOK, while New Democracy reserved the right to adopt a position before the plenum, while Golden Dawn and the Greek Communist Party (KKE) voted “present.”

Some 20 organizations and agencies representing migrant and refugee communities made their case before the parliamentary committees earlier and the debate will now continue on the individual articles.

While supporting the bill in principle, they asked for changes to individual conditions set for acquiring nationality, such as the requirement to complete school, lack of provision for children with special needs or children attending foreign-language schools, the rejection of applications if there are legal obstacles and linking the acquisition of nationality by children with the legal status of their parents.
