Under Secretary of State for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human
Rights, Sarah Sewall, and Ambassador Donald Lu met today with Prime
Minister Edi Rama. Under Secretary Sewall thanked PM Rama and the
Government of Albania for hosting the Regional Countering Violent
Extremism Summit in Tirana, which follows the White House summit held
earlier this year.
She acknowledged that this summit is an important step in building toward this year’s United Nations General Assembly, where governments and civil society will make commitments to support concrete policies and programs designed to counter the rising threat of violent extremism.
Highlighting how corruption can undermine good governance and disenfranchise those who ultimately turn to violent extremism as a last resort, the Under Secretary encouraged the Prime Minister and the Government of Albania to support a comprehensive CVE strategy that involves civil society, youth, women, and religious leaders, and that seeks to build strong law enforcement-community relations.
