Forbes: Greece Should Beware Russians Bearing Gifts
by Aggelos Skordas - Apr 6, 2015
The Greek expectations from Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras’ upcoming visit to Moscow have become the center of international media, while European officials, such as the European Parliament President Martin Schulz, have warned Athens to be cautious towards Russia and not to put in risk the Union’s common policy. Today, it was the turn of internationally acclaimed writer and analyst Tim Worstall to sound the bell for the Greek government. In an article published in Forbes Wortsall says “Greece should beware Russians bearing gifts.”
“Greece really should keep in mind what happened in Cyprus a few years back. There were indications of Russian help being available but in they end no actual money turned up. That is quite aside from the problems over what might be demanded even for the promise of such funds, let along their actual arrival: Greece is stepping up efforts to find allies in the US and Russia as cash reserves run dry while an agreement on additional funding from the country’s euro partners still looks like weeks away,» the writer underlines, paralleling the Cyprus adventure with Greece’s unofficial hopes for Russian funds.
“What could be a possibility is that Russia might provide some interim finance (as it did to the Ukraine), or even ongoing financing if Greece were to default and thus not be able to gain other funding. But then at that point Greece would be in exactly the position it has said it does not want to be all along: outside the euro and in default,” Worstall concludes.
