Jailed Greek lawmakers granted special leave to address Parliament over Golden Dawn charges
ATHENS, Greece – Two jailed
Greek lawmakers granted special prison leave have appeared in
Parliament to defend themselves against charges linked to the
Nazi-inspired Golden Dawn party.
Golden Dawn lawmaker Georgios Germenis, and Efstathios Boukouras — whom the party expelled this year — both deny illegal firearms or ammunition possession.
Parliament will vote later Wednesday on whether to lift their immunity from prosecution on the charges.
Authorities launched a sweeping investigation into Golden Dawn after last year's murder of a left-wing musician, allegedly by a party supporter.
Party leader Nikos Michaloliakos, Germenis, Boukouras and another three of the 18 lawmakers elected on the Golden Dawn ticket are in jail pending trial for allegedly running a criminal organization, and immunity has already been lifted on those charges. All deny any wrongdoing.
