US, EU concerned over Albania's plan to replace election watchdog member ahead of June poll
TIRANA,
Albania - The United States has expressed concern over plans by
Albania's conservative government to replace a member of the country's
election watchdog ahead of national polls on June 23.
The government of Prime Minister Sali Berisha announced the plan after a junior partner in his government recently left the coalition. The member Berisha wants to replace is from that party.
The U.S. ambassador to Albania, Alexander Arvizu, on Monday said the late change to the Central Election Commission would put the country on a potential "collision course with the U.S. and the international community."
European Union officials in Tirana also expressed concern.
The international community will send more than 400 observers for the polls in post-communist Albania, which has so far failed to fully meet international election standards.
