Turkey verbal note to UN: Threatens war with Greece over Continental Shelf
Turkey just proceeded to deposit a verbal note to the UN which denies the right of the Greek islands in the EEZ and continental shelf, in violation of Article 121 of the Convention on the Law of the Sea, which in accordance with customary international law is therefore mandatory in nature and which binds all the countries of the international community.
Essentially Turkey is carving up its own EEZ on top of the Greek EEZ and threatens with war in case Greece decides to pursue its rights.
The above answer in response to the Greek verbal note submitted to the UN on 20 February 2013 and just one week after the meeting of the countries prime ministers.
The Foreign Ministry issued a statement whereby "the Greek government, in continuation of its recent actions, will secure all the sovereign rights of the country, such as those arising from International Law".
