"Hungary to get one million new citizens"

BUDAPEST -- By the end of the mandate of the current government, one million more people will be given Hungarian citizenship, Zsolt Semjen has said.
Semjen serves as deputy prime minister in charge of Hungary's national policy.
He said that the number of citizenship applications would reach 700,000 by the end of this year, while the number of "oaths taken" will reach 650,000, the Beta agency said, quoting a report that appeared on the "Vojvodina Today" Hungarian language website.

Semjen added that the criteria for granting citizenship would not be made more stringent, "except possibly for minor corrections."

The official also said there had been "fewer abuses than could have been expected," while, according to him, reports about the abuses of the process "sometimes originate from secret services of the countries that do not like the fact many Hungarians live in their territory who have managed to bounce back from a semi-assimilated state."
