Greek membership in eurozone is "irrevocable" - EU

BRUSSELS -- European Commission spokesperson Annika Breidthardt said on Monday Greece's membership in the eurozone "cannot be revoked."

The comments came "amid growing concerns whether upcoming elections in Greece will lead to the country exiting the eurozone," RT is reporting.
French President Francois Hollande said earlier that while "the Greeks are free to choose their own destiny," there were also "certain engagements that have been made and all those must be of course respected."

His statement came after media speculation that Germany was prepared to accept Greece's possible departure from the eurozone, after which a spokesperson for the government in Berlin said Germany was convinced Greece would remain committed to the program of financial consolidation initiated by the EU.

AP reported that "opposition Radical Left Coalition Syriza party underscored it had no intention of pulling Greece out of the eurozone," and accused Prime Minister Antonis Samaras of scaring the nation about the implications of a Syriza electoral win.

According to Reuters, Syriza leader Alexis Tsipras said in December his party would "ask Europe to erase a big portion of its debt."
