Greece will hold snap elections next March since Parliament will not be able to elect a new President, the leader of the Democratic Left Fotis Kouvelis told reporters on Tuesday, after his meeting with President Karolos Papoulias.
"Elections will be held, as it seems, in March because of the non-election of a President of the Republic," Kouvelis said.
He also called for a meeting of party leaders to form a common front on Greece's debt.
Kouvelis told Papoulias political differences and clashes are acceptable in a democracy but have to be put aside, so that party leaders can find some common ground on the country's debt negotiations.
"I wanted to inform you (the President) of our proposal to convene the council of political leaders in order to agree on how to claim a restructuring of the country's debt," he said.
"If we don't have this renegotiation for the viability of our debt it is obvious this will have detrimental effects...on Greek society," he added.
