Albania, Bulgaria Offer Greek Professors Big Salaries, Cars
“Greek professors wanted to tutor in Albanian and Bulgarian Universities. Very good salary. Transportation, accommodation and alimentation covered.” This ad was published in several Albanian and Bulgarian media to lure Greek professors to teach in those countries a few days a week, to work for private institutions.
The Greek newspaper Kathimerini reported that some Greek professors have already moved to Saudi Arabia or Qatar for big salaries and three-year deals. The Rector of the University of Ioannina, Triantafyllos Albanis, said that, “Some representatives of Albanian colleges asked to meet me at my office. I thought they intended to discuss about issues concerning our research collaboration, but they wanted to offer some professors of our University a good position in Albania.”
Albanis said he was told that there are seven private colleges in neighboring Albania which follow a European or American program and cooperate with several universities abroad. Albanian representatives told him they would offer Greek academics a car as well to transport them from the border, as well as big salaries and would cover all their expenses in the country, including food and accommodation.
Similar proposals have been addressed to professors of the northern Dimokritio University to work for Bulgarian universities though none had reportedly accepted yet.
