Albanian police seize 1 ton of marijuana bound for Greece

TIRANA, Albania — Albanian police say they have seized 1,000 kilograms (2,205 pounds) of marijuana, which was to be smuggled to neighbouring Greece.

Police said in a statement Tuesday they had arrested one person and were searching for another three suspects who had been carrying the drugs in separate cars in the district of Gjirokastra, 137 miles (220 kilometres) south of the capital Tirana and close to the Greek border.

Albania, a small Balkan country bordering the Adriatic just north of Greece, is considered a source of drug trafficking for marijuana and a transit point for heroin from southwest Asia.
