“Macedonia is not a good child”, this conclusion was made by the Ministers of Culture of Greece and Bulgaria - Kostas Cavaras and Vezhdi Rashidov. The statement was made during their meeting, yesterday.
The Proto Thema on-line edition announced that the two ministers talked about proclaiming the forthcoming year 2013 as the year of the saint brothers Cyril and Methodius. During the talks, Minister Rashidov expressed his discontentedness over Macedonia.

Belgrade. Serbian Prime Minister Ivica Dacic has announced he will not negotiate with Hashim Thaci and Catherine Ashton, if the agreement about the customs duties on goods entering from the north is not respected, Kosovo’s KS Reporter reported.
“I will not participate in the talks, if the agreement reached is not respected“, said Dacic, quoted by radio B92.

BELGRADE -- At the heart of the new platform on Kosovo and Metohija which will soon be presented by President Nikolić is the status of northern Kosovo.

According to unofficial information obtained by this newspaper, Serbia should "fight for as broad formal and status rights of the compatriots in Kosovo". The idea is to get the broadest possible and substantial autonomy for northern parts of Kosovo, and for it to be "some kind of entity, such as, for example, the Serb Republic (RS)".

In practice, there would no longer be institutions of Serbia, but of this "Serb autonomy", according to the article. This proposal will be a subject of discussion with the international community.

However, the platform will also refer to the Constitution of Serbia, because Belgrade will under no circumstances recognize Kosovo as a state, writes the daily.

"This approach defends the main goal - to make the daily life of our people as easy as possible, and for them to, at the same time, not be strictly tied to the institutions in Priština," says the article.

Meanwhile, President Tomislav Nikolić met on Monday with ambassadors of the Russian Federation, China and Britain, to inform them about the progress in building a state strategy for Kosovo.

Prime Minister Ivica Dačić confirmed for Večernje Novosti that the head of state will this week present the platform to the opposition.

President of the Parliamentary Committee on Kosovo and Metohija Milovan Drecun said he expected the document to find its way quickly to parliament.

"No need to hurry, we need to think through and harmonize our positions, it may be two, three or ten days. We should avoid having contradictions in the text."

Opposition DS MP Borislav Stefanović believes that "nothing spectacular" should be expected from the platform:

Opposition DSS deputy leader Slobodan Samardžić told the daily that the platform was "too late to change anything for the better, because the government has a policy modeled on the previous one".

"Serbia is far too deep in giving in to Kosovo Albanians and in submitting to intensive requirements of the EU to do so."

Opposition LDP MP Bojan Đurić said that the document was not yet published ""because of the need of the authorities and Nikolić to retain the image of national fighters, and even out a situation in which officials of the ruling coalition negotiate with Hashim Thaci, reaching agreements".

The National Assembly confirmed the news that there would be no technical obstacles for the vote on the platform to take place by the end of the year.

If the text arrives in parliament, it is likely that the session which began on Saturday will be suspended, and a new one started in order for MPs to declare themselves on the strategy for Kosovo.

And although government leaders publicly summarize the Sunday meeting as having achieved "absolute unity", according to reports, the debate was at times "very heated".

ZAGREB -- The Serb National Council in Croatia (SNV) doubts the veracity of the census results in Croatia "due to serious irregularities", says Milorad Pupovac.

According to the 1991 census, there were 581,000 ethnic Serbs in Croatia. In 2001, the number was 201,000, while the latest census reported 186,000.

Sofia. The relations of Bulgaria and Greece with FYROM and the Euro-Atlantic prospects of the Western Balkans were among the key topics during the talks between Bulgarian PM Boyko Borisov and his Greek counterpart Antonis Samaras, BNT learned.

The two confirmed their support for the EU prospects of Western Balkan states, emphasising on good neighbourly relations as the vital condition that must be met. Important news was announced regarding the economic relations between the two countries as they voiced their commitment to open the new border checkpoint Makaza – Komotini in March, 2013.

“We fully back the accession of all Balkan countries to NATO and the EU. This is the only way to achieve peace, integration and cooperation,” PM Borisov was quoted as saying by the BNR. However, as Bulgaria and Greece both strictly abided by neighbourliness, demonstrated mutual respect, acknowledged their mutual interests and used dialogue as a means to solve their problems, thus he was hoping that all countries in the region aspiring for EU and NATO entry would follow the same rules.

The two PMs defined their first official meeting as strategic for the development of the entire spectrum of economic and geopolitical matters between the two countries. At a joint intergovernmental meeting an emphasis was placed on cross-border cooperation against crime and illegal emigration as well as key infrastructure and energy projects like the construction of the Struma motorway and the construction of the gas interconnector between the two countries that will begin in March as well, the BNT informs.

Croatia to help Kosovo security forces on path to NATO

Croatian Defence Minister Ante Kotromanovic said in Pristina on Thursday that Croatia supported the development of Kosovo security forces and Pristina’s aspirations to enter NATO, expressing Croatia’s readiness to share the experience of its Armed Forces in the necessary adjustments and further development of Kosovo troops.

Kotromanovic said Croatia planned to maintain active within the NATO-led peacekeepers in Kosovo (KFOR) as long as it is necessary to achieve permanent stability in this youngest European state.

Commenting on the situation in northern Kosovo, both sides agreed that Kosovo security forces need to play a deciding role in securing conditions for Kosovo Serbs to feel safe, the statement said.
The Croatian minister also held talks with KFOR commander, Major General Volker Halbauer, the statement said.

When the 24 year-old shooter, Adam Lanza, entered the elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut on Friday morning, Yvonne Cech realized that something bad was about to happen and started thinking of ways to protect her students.

When Cech, a Greek-American librarian, heard the first gunshots she locked herself, an assistant, and 18 fourth-graders in a closet behind file cabinets in the library.
“We spent 45 minutes locked in a closet during the shootings,” she said to local media in Connecticut after she made it out of the school building.
“The SWAT team escorted us out,” and then all 18 children were reunited with their parents.
The Greek-American librarian was one of the heroes who saved her students’ lives. Victoria Soto was another teacher who sacrificed her life to save her class. None of her students were harmed.
There were 20 children between ages 5 and 10 the staff could not save. Their names and lives could be those from any primary school on either side of the Atlantic.
Among them are Daniel Barden, aged six; Chase Kowalski, whose sister Natalie attends the school but escaped injury; Jesse Lewis, six, whose class were set to make gingerbread houses that day; Grace McDonnell, aged six, who lived a street away from her killer; Ana Marquez-Greene, aged seven, the daughter of Canadian jazz saxophonist Jimmy Greene; Emilie Parker, aged six, whose family had moved to Newtown from Utah only a year ago; Avielle Richman, Catherine Hubbard, Noah Vabner, and Benjamin Wheeler, all aged six.
The gunman, Adam Lanza, killed 27 people in total including his mother. Before heading to Sandy Hook Elementary School, where his mother was also a teacher, he shot and killed her at a house they shared in Newtown.
The motive for the mass killing, the second-deadliest school shooting in U.S. history, remains unknown.

President informs ambassadors about state platform

BELGRADE -- President Tomislav Nikolić met on Monday in Belgrade with Russian Ambassador Aleksandr Chepurin to discuss Serbia's state platform for Kosovo.

The Russian diplomat was informed about the progress made in drafting the document, according to the president's press service.
Chepurin also learned that the platform will be presented to parliamentary group leaders and representatives of Serbs from Kosovo "as soon as possible".

Chepurin for his part once again expressed Russia's support, and stressed that his country was ready to help advocate Serbia's position in international organizations.

According to a statement, during the "open and friendly" conversation, Nikolić expressed his gratitude to Russia for that country's support to Serbia's endeavors to preserve its territorial integrity.

Chinese ambassador reaffirms support

Serbian President Tomislav Nikolić informed Monday Chinese Ambassador to Serbia Zhang Wanxueon about progress made in terms of preparing a national platform for resolving the issue of Kosovo and Metohija and the ambassador said that, when it comes to Kosovo, China has a clear and consistent stand on the Republic of Serbia's territorial integrity and sovereignty.

Nikolić pointed out that Serbia appreciates China's principled position regarding the country's aspirations for the preservation of its territorial integrity and peaceful solution to the issue of Serbia's southern province, the president's press service released in a statement.

The Serbian president also said that he will seek support for the platform from the Serbian parliament and Kosovo Serb representatives as soon as possible.

The ambassador stressed that his country sees Serbia as an important partner in the Western Balkans, with whom China has fostered long-term mutual understanding, friendship and cooperation.

China appreciates Serbia's principled position on the issue of Tibet and Taiwan, and has a clear and consistent position on Kosovo-Metohija. It also advocated respect for territorial integrity and sovereignty of Serbia, Zhang Wanxueon said.

He underlined that China encourages national companies interested in investing in Serbia, and thanked President Nikolić for his personal engagement in providing adequate interlocutors and associates for representatives of Chinese companies in Serbia, the statement reads.

President meets with British envoy

Tomislav Nikolić also met with British Ambassador Michael Davenport on Monday, with the progress regarding the Kosovo platform on the agenda.

During "open and candid talks", Nikolić expressed the ambition of resolving the Kosovo and Metohija issue during this mandate so as to contribute to stabilization of the situation in the region, said a statement.

Davenport pointed out that his country "considers as positive the decision of Serbia to implement previously reached agreements", and continue the talks with representatives of Priština interim institutions.

He stated that the recent decision of the European Council regarding Serbia's further progress in the European integration is a positive sign that Serbia has "a new perspective for a European future".

Church, ethnic Greeks reject results of Albanian census

TIRANA -- Official results of a census held in 2011 in Albania are unacceptable and unrealistic, the Orthodox Church of Albania has stated.

Democratic Union of the Greek Minority Omonoia has requested from the Albanian government and the international community not to accept the published results.
Omonoia believes that the results have been falsified to the detriment of ethnic Greeks and other Orthodox minorities – Macedonians and Montenegrins.

The Church has announced that it would release an official statement that would be signed by Bishop of Tirana and Albania Anastiasie.

Omonoia has announced that it will do a parallel census in order to prove that the released results are not realistic.

According to the official census results, Albania has a population of 2.8 million. There are 24.360 Greeks or 0.54 percent of the population, while Greek is a mother tongue of only 0.15 percent of the citizens. Media and certain officials claim that there are 300,000 Greeks living in Albania.

The information that there are 8,000 of Roma and Cincars in Albania is also questioned.

98.7 percent of the population speaks Albanian as their mother tongue.

Media in Greece also believe that the Albanian census is not trustworthy.

Albanian political parties have welcomed the results of the census, claiming they “have unmasked pretensions and chauvinistic manners of Athens and its servants”.

“I’m wondering how much this society can endure before it explodes,” said Georg Pieper, a German psychotherapist who specializes in treating post-traumatic stress disorders following catastrophes, large accidents (including the deadliest train wreck ever in Germany), acts of violence, freed hostages.... He’d spent several days in Athens to give continuing education courses in trauma therapy for psychologist, psychiatrists, and doctors—for free, this being a country in crisis. He was accompanied by Melanie Mühl, an editor at the daily paper Frankfurter Allgemeine. And in her report, she decries how “news consumers” in Germany were fed the crisis in Greece.

It was “no more than a distant threat somewhere on the horizon,” defined by barely understood terms, such as bank bailout, haircut, billion-euro holes, mismanagement, Troika, debt buyback.... “Instead of understanding the global context, we see a serious-faced Angela Merkel getting out of dark limos in Berlin, Brussels or elsewhere, on the way to the next summit where the bailout of Greece, and thus of Europe, is to be moved forward another step” [also read... But what is really happening in Greece is silenced to death in the media. Pieper calls this phenomenon a “giant feat of repression.”

Since the cleaning staff had been let go, doctors and nurses, who hadn’t been paid in months, were cleaning the toilets themselves. The hospital was running short on basic medical supplies, such as latex gloves and catheters. And the suicide rate doubled over the last three years—two-thirds of them, men.

“Collective trauma” is how Pieper described the society whose bottom had been pulled out from under it. “Men are particularly hard hit by the crisis,” Pieper said, as their pay had been decimated, or their jobs eliminated. They’re seething with anger at the utterly corrupt system and a kleptocratic government that have done so much damage to the country; and they’re furious at the international bailout politics whose money only benefits big banks, not the people.

These men take their anger to their families, and their sons take that anger to the street. Hence the growing number of violent gangs that attack minorities. The will to survive in humans is enormous, Pieper points out, and so humans are able to overcome even incredibly difficult situations. To do that, they need a functioning society with real structures and safety nets. But in Greece, society has been hollowed out for years to the point where it is collapsing.

“In such a dramatic situation as can be observed in Greece, the human being becomes a sort of predator, only seeing himself and his own survival,” Pieper said. “Sheer necessity pushes him into irrationality, and in the worst case, this irrationality transcends into criminality.” At that stage in society, he said, “solidarity is replaced by selfishness.”..............................................

NATO missiles in Turkey could lead to "world war"

Tehran -- The planned deployment of NATO Patriot missiles along Turkey's border with Syria could lead to a "world war", says Iranian army official.

"Each one of these Patriots is a black mark on the world map, and is meant to cause a world war," General Hassan Firouzabadi said, Reuters has reported.
"They are making plans for a world war, and this is very dangerous for the future of humanity and for the future of Europe itself," he added.

Turkey, that supports the Syrian opposition in their attempt to topple President Bashar al-Assad, asked for NATO’s help after conflicts started to spill over the border and into Turkey. The alliance officially approved the request on December 4.

Patriot missiles are used to intercept aircrafts and missiles and around 400 German and 360 Dutch troops will be deployed to Turkey.

NATO claims that the deployment of the Patriot system will only serve for defense purposes while Russia, Syria and Iran warn that it will only deepen instability in the region.

Manchester City collected the three points without too much trouble with a 3-1 win over Newcastle but their season took another unexpected turn when Aleksandar Kolarov, their Serbian defender, allegedly became involved in an altercation with a home fan bearing the national flag of Albania.
Northumbria police confirmed they had received a complaint of racist language being used and were investigating the matter. A spokesman said: "Northumbria police takes such allegations extremely seriously and inquiries are ongoing into the incident."
Kolarov was warming up on the touchline at the time, before his introduction as a first-half substitute, when he caught sight of the flag and made a remark to its owner. It is not clear exactly what was said. Two Albanian Newcastle supporters made the complaint. City had no official comment to make other than to say that they had been made aware of a verbal exchange between a player and a spectator, and Kolarov travelled back to Manchester on the team bus.
Neither Roberto Mancini nor Alan Pardew witnessed the incident and were unable to comment further, with the City manager understandably preferring to stick with Manchester rivalries rather than venture into Balkan politics.
Mancini insisted his only message to Sir Alex Ferguson is a friendly, festive one after his side returned to their stylish best. Defeat in the Manchester derby last Sunday meant City fell six points behind their neighbours at the top of the Premier League, but Mancini reckons it is too early to make firm predictions about the title race. "It was important to start winning again after losing but the only message I wish to send to Sir Alex is 'Happy Christmas for the 25th,'" the City manager said. "We know very well that in this championship the title race is not finished."
Mancini will also have to do without Samir Nasri for several weeks, after the midfielder limped off with a groin strain. Mario Balotelli, however, was dropped from the squad because he had not been playing very well. "He is not in good form at the moment," his manager confirmed. "We left him at home because it is better right now if he continues to train."
