Putin, Obama Hold Much-Anticipated Talks at UN General Assembly

Russian President Vladimir Putin meets US President Barack Obama

Behind closed doors, Russian President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart Barack Obama held a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

This marked the first official face-to-face meeting between the two world leaders in the last two years.

"The relations between Russia and the US are, unfortunately, at a rather low level," President Putin said in a press conference after the meeting. "But it is not our initiative to bring the relations between Russia and the United States to such a [low] level. It's the position of our American partners."

Both the Kremlin and the White House said beforehand that Putin and Obama planned to discuss the situations in Syria and Ukraine, among other international issues.

In Brief: Putin's Address to the United Nations in 10 Quotes
On Syria, the Russian president reiterated his stance that any solution to the crisis must involve Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Putin pointed out that US President Obama and French President Francois Hollande are not Syrian citizens, and therefore should not be involved in deciding Syria's leadership.

Still, he remained hopeful that international cooperation on the crisis remains possible.

"I think there is still a way to work together on the problems we all face," President Putin said.

He also said Moscow was not ruling out the possibility of joining the airstrike campaign against the self-proclaimed Islamic State terrorist group. Putin did, however, rule out the possibility of Russian ground operations.

"We believe that the work on fighting terrorism must go hand in hand with the political process in Syria, but any participation of Russian military units in ground operations is out of the question."

Putin and Obama also discussed the creation of joint anti-terrorism mechanisms.

"We just talked about cooperation between the United States and Russia on this anti-terrorist track. We share an understanding that it is necessary to strengthen our work, at least on a bilateral basis.

"We will now jointly think about creating relevant mechanisms."

Putin also encouraged all nations to join in the work of the Baghdad Coordination Center.

On Ukraine, President Putin noted Washington's role in the ongoing crisis.

"The United States is to a known extent standing behind Kiev authorities; they are in constant contact with the Europeans," he said.

He also addressed the fact that Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko was not present during the Russian leader's UNGA address.

"I did not notice that the Ukrainian president was not present during my speech…it's not really important to me for everyone to be present without exception, especially those that do not find it interesting."

The meeting lasted approximately one hour, due to both leaders' tight schedules.

Obama Should Join Putin in Unified Effort in Syria – Former US Senator
"Events like this are helpful," Putin said. "They are very productive because there is no need to go through all the protocol and ceremony."

"This visit was very productive," he added.

The meeting followed high-profile speeches delivered by both leaders before the UNGA, as well as a state luncheon hosted by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

Relations between Putin and Obama have been tense since the implementation of Western sanctions against Moscow last year.

"We have stated from the very beginning that the policy of sanctions and isolation in general is ineffective in the modern world, their goals are usually not achieved," Putin told reporters after the meeting.

"And with regard to a country such as Russia, this is simply impossible."

Greece, Albania Quarrel Over Contested Territory

Epirus

Things are not too smooth on the Balkan Peninsula yet again – a political dispute is about to arise between Greece and Albania over Athens’ plan to start hydrocarbon exploration in the contested territory between the two nations.

Tensions between Albania and Greece are rising following Tirana's official complaint to Athens regarding territorial claims along the border between the two countries, Greek Reporter said.

In the official complaint, the Albanian government asked Greece to review its plans for hydrocarbon exploration in the Ionian Sea, citing that it violates the territorial integrity of Albania.

Furthermore, Albania demanded Greece to present maps of land explorations in Epirus, the bordering region between the two neighbors.

The Greek side claims the move is part of the nationalist idea of creating a "Greater Albania," a country that would include all Balkan regions with an ethnic Albanian population. In addition to existing Albania, "Greater Albania" would include Kosovo, parts of Serbia, Montenegro, Macedonia and Greece. The idea is a populist political move currently favored by Albanian politicians in search of extra votes, Greek Reporter said.

Turkey May Request NATO’s Help to Counter Threats From Syria, ISIL

Ankara, if necessary, will request the assistance of NATO in repelling threats of Syrian President Bashar Assad’s regime and the Islamic State terrorist group, Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu told journalists.

UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) — According to the prime minister, Turkey will contribute to NATO's actions in respect to ISIL.
“Of course, if there is such a need, we will request assistance [from NATO] in countering any threats, such as rocket attacks from Syria and the terrorist threat emanating from the territory of the country," Davutoglu said Monday.
Syria has been in a state of civil war since 2011. Government forces have been clashing with armed rebel groups, including ISIL, which has occupied a large part of the country.
Turkey, along with many Western countries, has taken a hard line on Assad’s regime, saying that the Syrian president must be deposed in order to end almost half a decade of civil war.

Catalan Election Results Threaten to Rock the EU

Catalonia's regional government president and leader of the Catalan Democratic Convergence (CDC) Artur Mas waves as he celebrates, following the results of the Catalan regional election on September 27, 2015 in Barcelona.

Pro-independence parties are celebrating in Catalonia after winning an absolute majority in regional elections. Crowds are chanting "invincible, invincible" and dancing in the streets, expressing their desire for independence, while EU leaders play down the potential for a Catalexit.

The main pro-independence party, the Junts per Si won 72 seats and the smaller nationalist CUP party won 10 seats in the regional parliament. The party leaders will now proceed with their promise to create an independent Catalan state.
"We have won", regional President Artus Mas told his supporters who has vowed to separate from Spain within 18 months. But only 47 percent of the votes were cast for pro-independence parties, suggesting a future referendum may not automatically lead to victory.

Pro independence supporters wave "estelada" or pro independence flags during a rally of "Junts pel Si" or "Together for YES" in Barcelona, Spain, Friday, Sept. 25, 2015
Madrid's conservative government has vowed to reject any push for independence and has ordered an urgent reform of Spain's constitutional court to stop any future moves for a breakaway state. But the results don't just threaten to rock Spanish unity — but its relationship with the European Union.
Germany has instantly reacted to regional elections calling for the country to respect EU treaties, but the citizens of Catalonia may well be able to have their Catalan cake and eat it.
There is no plan in place for what happens when an EU member state splits apart. If Catalonia breaks away from Spain, the state would automatically be excluded from the EU and the euro.
However, Spain's constitution says that citizens "living abroad" can keep their Spanish passports. So, even without being a member of the EU, citizens of a new Republic of Catalonia would keep their EU citizenship.

Catalonia, which produces 20 percent of Spain's gross domestic product, is an economically healthy region and Barcelona and Madrid aren't keen on losing it. And neither is Brussels.
Another potential split in the Eurozone is another headache for the European Commission, which has only just finalized bailout talks with Greece, avoiding a Grexit, and faces more rounds of reform discussions with Britain keen to reform its relationship with the EU, paving the way for a potential Brexit.
Not to mention the refugee crisis which has split political opinion in almost every member state and led to walls and fences being built across an "open Europe".
Commenting on the regional elections in Catalonia, the European Commission (EC) spokesman Margaritis Schinas said:
"The EC, in principle, does not comment on regional elections, [it is] an internal matter for Spain."
"[It's] not for the Commission to express a position on a matter of internal organization related to the constitutional provisions of a member state."
The EU maybe be playing down their interest in regional elections — but as momentum gathers in "invincible" Catalonia, the Commission won't be able to ignore a Catalexit, and the potential economic fallout for Spain — and the Eurozone.

Europe's Blind Support for US' Foreign Policy Pushing EU Into Abyss

While bureaucrats in Brussels try to shift the burden of responsibility for Syrian refugees to Serbia, the Eurocrats have apparently forgotten that the Balkan country has had to deal with its own Serbian refugee problem caused by the bloody dissolution of Yugoslavia instigated by the West, Dragana Trifkovic told Sputnik.

The current migration of people from the Middle East to Europe is an event of historic proportions, which could result in the long-term destabilization of European countries and drastically change the established status quo on the European continent, according to Dragana Trifkovic, an author, expert in geopolitics and the Director General of the Center for Geostrategic Studies, in Belgrade, Serbia.
"The huge wave of migrants from the Middle East is a big problem for Europe because it substantially changes its structure. We are now practically at the beginning of a crisis that will probably escalate in the future. Concerning Serbia, we are a transiting country for the migrants, not their final goal, and we don't have a strategy for their permanent stay.  That would be unacceptable for Serbia because the country cannot even provide a normal life for its own citizens, which is why young people leave Serbia looking for better conditions abroad," Trifkovic told Sputnik.
Eurocrats Shifting Burden of Responsibility to Others
The expert elaborated that the danger for Serbia comes from Brussels, which pressures Belgrade to take care of a certain number of migrants. Yet on the other hand, the West cannot force the asylum seekers to stay in Serbia because the Balkan country is not considered as attractive as Germany. The asylum seekers do not view Serbia as a country, "that can offer them anything," Trifkovic underscored. Curiously enough, there is a new peculiar trend that can be now observed in the Balkans: Albanians from Kosovo and Metohija are joining the migrants from the Middle East on their way to Western Europe, according to the Director General of the Center for Geostrategic Studies.
"Until now, the Serbian government has been taking the line of least resistance and was making concessions to Washington and Brussels at the expense of Serbia's national interests. That is why some collaborators of the West already stated in the Serbian media that Serbia should take care of a certain number of migrants as a candidate for EU membership," the expert remarked.
However, it seems that the Brussels' bureaucracy has apparently forgotten that Serbia itself bears the burden of social problems caused by the Yugoslav Wars of 1991-2001 and NATO aggression against the Balkan state.
  • Serb civilians and reporters walk around a residential area damaged during a NATO attack on a neighboring army compound (300 kilometers south of Belgrade), Wednesday, April 28, 1999.

A man walks past the building of former federal military headquarters in Belgrade on March 24, 2010, destroyed during the 1999 NATO air campaign against Yugoslavia.
"I have to mention the fact that Serbia hasn't even found a solution for the Serbian refugees, I mean, for the Serbs that fled the regions where they were living because of the terror, regions that were annexed to the new born states after the breakdown of Yugoslavia. Many Serbs that fled from Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo and Metohija, still live in collective refugee centers and they don't have any other choice. Conditions in those centers are very bad," Trifkovic told Sputnik.
The expert pointed out that Serbia has in no way participated in the destruction of the Middle Eastern countries and so far has absolutely no obligation to cope with the consequences of decades-long US/NATO interventionist policy in the region.
Will Refugee Crisis Undermine Fragile Religious and Ethnic Balance in the Balkans?
One question has come up regarding whether or not the influx of Muslim refugees, which allegedly includes former Islamist fighters, will upset the fragile religious and ethnic balance in the Balkans and further aggravate tensions in the region? "We have seen that migrants are families with young children, and they should not be viewed through the war prism. Someone is responsible for the fate of these people and for destroying their future," Trifkovic emphasized, adding that the main problem in the Balkans is not Muslim refugees, but Muslim extremist and terrorist structures that are supported primarily by the United States, and then Turkey and Saudi Arabia.
"I mean that we have a problem with the Albanian terrorists, especially in Kosovo and Metohija and in connection with this problem, there is a project of a Greater Albania supported by Washington. Additionally we have a problem with the Wahhabi and Islamist extremists in Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as in parts of Serbia where there is a majority Muslim population. In this respect, the mechanism for the destabilization of the Balkans has long been established over these terrorist structures," the expert told Sputnik.
Still, although the influx of refugees from the Middle East is a much more serious problem for Western Europe, unfortunately it could jeopardize the security of the Balkans as well, according to the expert.
A Syrian refugee man holding his sleeping son, rests on the ground after spending the night at a collection point in the truck parking lot of the former border station on the Austrian side of the Hungarian-Austrian border near Nickelsdorf, Austria, Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2015.
"The solution has to be found and accepted by Europe as a whole, but not by constructing fences, which is totally contrary to the self-declared ideology of the freedom of movement and the protection of human rights," she stressed.
In light of this the current crisis may deal a lethal blow to the European Union, resulting in its ultimate collapse.
EU's Blind Support for US Interventionist Policies Backfires at Europe
"The blind support of US interventionist policies that has resulted in the destruction of the Middle East countries, as well as in the long-term destabilization of the region, will have major consequences for the EU and Europe in general. Additionally, European countries financed, supported and armed the rebels, adventurers and terrorists, in order to overthrow the regimes considered inappropriate by Washington," the expert stressed.
Trifkovic called attention to the fact that the European elites, however, still don't think about their own responsibilities and that they are unwilling to solve those problems. Instead, the EU member states are arguing with each other over how many refugees each country should take in. The expert believes that a strategic approach to the refugee crisis in Europe should include shifting from the previous irresponsible policy conducted by Brussels towards its own citizens, and ending the EU's blind support of Washington's interests.
The second step in mending the crisis should be halting the West's foreign policy aimed at destabilizing the Middle East, and developing a plan in order to eliminate the consequences of this policy.
"That kind of plan would have to involve help for state-building forces, not for the forces of chaos. For example, help for Bashar al-Assad to stop ISIL's expansion, to settle the conflict, to stabilize and take care of people who were injured during the war," Trifkovic suggested.
Henry Kissinger: 'To Be America's Friend is Fatal'
Commenting on the possible consequences of the refugee crisis to Europe, Dragana Trifkovic cited famous US politician Henry Kissinger, who once quipped that "it may be dangerous to be America's enemy, but to be America's friend is fatal."
"There is a very important book titled "Europe has died in Pristina", written by Jacques Hogard, a former French officer who had seen with his own eyes the suicide of Europe and described it in his book. The decadence of European civilization is entering its final phase. The only hope that remains is that new political elites will grow stronger, elites that are aware of the situation in which we find ourselves and that they will be able to assume a historic responsibility and work on correcting the errors of unaccountable bureaucrats in Brussels," Trifkovic pointed out.
And still there is a light at the end of the tunnel, she believes:
"I would like to add that I am optimistic, that the migrant crisis is a problem that could reanimate Europe and force it to take its fate into its own hands," Dragana Trifkovic concluded.

The militants from the Kurdistan Workers' Party said that a total of 75 Turkish soldiers and policemen were killed in an attack on the military site on the border between Turkey and Iraq.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — A total of 75 Turkish soldiers and policemen were killed in an attack on the military site on the border between Turkey and Iraq, the militants from the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) said as quoted by the local media.
“The PKK carried out during the last few hours several operations against the Turkish army and police positions in Chernakh area near the Iraqi border, which resulted in the killing of 75 Turkish soldiers and policemen,” a spokesman for the armed wing of the political group told Iraqi News portal on Sunday.
He added that militants seized Turkish soldiers’ weapons and ammunition in the operation that retaliated for the ”killing of a number of PKK fighters during the Turkish attacks on their positions.”
Tensions in Turkey escalated in mid-summer when the country launched a military campaign against PKK in northern Iraq, after militants claimed responsibility for the murders of several Turkish police officers they insisted were allied with Islamic State.
The PKK, considered to be a terrorist organization by Ankara, began its separatist insurgency in 1984. The group seeks to create a Kurdish state in parts of Turkey and Iraq.

Despite disagreements with his US counterpart, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the two countries presidents have the will to work together against ISIL.

US and Russia have the will to work together, despite many disagreements, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said after his meeting with John Kerry at the United Nations Headquarters.
Lavrov also noted that there are many disagreements, such as that the US believes that it does not need UN Security Council permission to act against ISIL in Syria, while Russia considers it a violation of international law. In addition,
"The will to worth together along both the line of diplomatic bodies and the military line is there. I think that the more these questions are discussed on the level of professionals, the easier it will be to solve the most difficult issue that stands before all of us," Lavrov said.
The two top diplomats initially issued contradictory statements as Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the coordination center being created in Iraq seeks to unite parties in the fight against ISIL while US State Secretary John Kerry charged that coordination is not happening. "We coordinate the activity [with partners] in the fight against ISIL," the minister said ahead of the meeting with US Secretary of State John Kerry, commenting on the center’s goal.
After the meeting, Kerry charged that the efforts in the fight against ISIL are not being coordinated among all parties.
"I think the critical thing is that all of the efforts need to be coordinated. This is not yet coordinated. I think we have concerns about how we are going to go forward," Kerry said.
The two top diplomats agreed during their meeting Sunday that they could meet again on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly if necessary, a source in the Russian delegation said.

Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that he had personally informed the heads of Turkey, Jordan and Saudi Arabia about the establishment of a coordination structure to fight the IS militants, adding that Washington was informed about it as well. The Islamic State is a Sunni jihadist group that seized vast lands in Iraq and Syria in 2014. A US-led international coalition has been conducting airstrikes against IS militants in Iraq since August, 2014 and in Syria since September, 2014.
ISIL-affiliated groups also operate in Yemen, Libya, Pakistan and Afghanistan.

BARCELONA (Sputnik) — The pro-independence parties obtained over 50 percent of votes at the Sunday Catalan regional election, exit polls conducted for local TV3 broadcaster showed.
The Junts pel Si (Together for Yes) coalition promoted by Catalan President Artur Mas secured 64 seats out of 135 in the regional parliament, according to the exit poll data. The coalition is followed by the radical left-wing pro-independence Popular Unity Candidacy party with 10 seats. The two leaders together exceed the number of seats needed for absolute majority by six. The center-left Citizens party got 20 sets, the left-wing coalition Catalonia Yes we Can obtained 16 seats. The Socialists' Party of Catalonia and the conservative People's Party of Catalonia secured 13 and 12 seats respectively, the exit polls showed.
The data was derived after interviewing about 30,000 voters.

UK Prime Minister David Cameron's spokesperson said that the Islamic State (ISIL) jihadist militant poses threat as much to Russia as it does to Europe and London should be able to find a way forward to work together with Russia in fight against ISIL.

LONDON (Sputnik) — London is ready to cooperate with Moscow in the fight against the Islamic State (ISIL) jihadist militant organization, UK Prime Minister David Cameron's spokesperson said on Sunday.
“We are clear ISIL [IS] poses a threat as much to Russia as it does to Europe and other countries around the world and therefore we should be able to find a way forward to work together,” the spokesperson told journalists.
A US-led coalition against the ISIL, comprised of 62 nations including the United Kingdom, has been engaged in military actions since August 2014. The coalition’s actions have not been authorized by the United Nations. On Thursday, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced it is discussing the creation of a greater coalition to fight the Islamic State than the one led by the United States. The broader coalition would use force under the permission of the UN Security Council.
According to a military-diplomatic source, Russia, Syria, Iran and Iraq recently created an information center in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad to coordinate the fight against the ISIL extremists.

Marine Le Pen Stresses Need to Build Close Ties With Russia

Leader of France’s National Front party Marine Le Pen said that it's shocking for France to have no relations with Russia.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Leader of France’s National Front party Marine Le Pen stressed on Sunday the need to establish a close partnership with Russia.
"We support Europe from Brest [Belarus] to Vladivostok [Russia], a stronger partnership with Russia," Le Pen said on Twitter.
"It's shocking to have no relations with Russia," another tweet by the National Front leader read.
Russia's relations with the West deteriorated sharply in 2014 over the Ukraine crisis. The United States, the European Union and their allies accused Moscow of meddling in Ukraine's internal affairs and introduced several rounds of anti-Russia sanctions.
Marine Le Pen has repeatedly urged to restore relations with Moscow and expressed support for Russia's foreign policy, including in the context of the Ukrainian crisis.

Revealed: The secret telegram from Washington before Greece's bailout deal -PHOTO
Washington had advised the previous SYRIZA-Independent Greeks government not to clash head-on with Germany and to show a willingness for reform in the weeks and months leading up to the July 13 agreement on a third bailout between Greece and its lenders, Kathimerini reveals.
A secret telegram sent to Athens by Greece’s Ambassador to the US, Christos Panagopoulos, on July 16 synopsized the relations between the two countries over the previous months. The copy seen by Kathimerini suggests that Washington showed a keen interest in keeping Greece in the eurozone and had consistently provided advice on how the government led by Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras should handle relations with the rest of the eurozone.
Washington, for instance, advised Athens to avoid verbal attacks on the German government and to try to create a broad alliance including countries like the UK, France, Italy and Austria. The US made it clear that the coalition would have to convince these countries that it was serious about implementing reforms if they were to then, in turn, offer their support.
Panagopoulos also explains in his note that Washington’s strategy was to stress the geopolitical importance of keeping Greece in the single currency and the need for the eurozone to agree a further reduction of Greek debt. The Greek ambassador suggests that the US government also encouraged the International Monetary Fund to be vocal on the issue of debt relief.
Sources also told Kathimerini that it was Washington who emphasized the geopolitical angle to the Greek issue through NATO. On June 19 NATO deputy Secretary General Alexander Vershbow said a Greek exit would “indeed have repercussions” for the alliance. He told a security conference in Bratislava that NATO was “worried about” a Grexit. His comments came just after Greece and Russia agreed a pipeline deal.
Panagopoulos describes in his telegram that there was frequent and extensive contact between Athens and Washington, including officials from the Treasury and the State Department, during the protracted negotiations that led to the signing of the third bailout in Brussels.

Syria has received 24 attack fighter warplanes from Russia, as well as reconnaissance aircraft and other sophisticated military equipment. In addition, at least 2,000 additional Russian soldiers are being sent to Syria.
In addition, Russia is setting up offices in Baghdad to coordinate military operations with Iran and Syria, and probably Iraq. According to Russia, the purpose of its military buildup is to fight the so-called Islamic State (IS or ISIS or ISIL or Daesh).
Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, the head of Hezbollah, Lebanon’s Iran-allied militia, on Friday explained the Russian military deployment as follows:
The failure of America and the international coalition to bring defeat to Daesh [ISIS] was one of the reasons which called or pushed Russia to also come, and to get directly involved.
Some reports indicate that the warplanes in Syria include SU-27 jets and SA-22 air to air missiles. These weapons have no use against ISIS, since ISIS has no air power. It’s likely that these weapons are directed at the United States coalition or at Israel.
This large Russian military deployment in Syria and Iraq, in alliance with Iran, is going to raise alarm bells throughout the Mideast, especially in Saudi Arabia, who see Syria and Iran as existential threats, and in Turkey, which now sees itself isolated from its historical allies in the Mideast. Jihadist groups, including al-Qaeda and ISIS, will see it as a repeat of the 1980s Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.
It is amazing how quickly things are changing in Syria. A month ago, we were still talking about how the US-led coalition was failing at conducting air strikes at ISIS. Today, Russia is coming close to pushing the US-led coalition out of Syria and Iraq entirely. Fox News and Reuters and Telegraph (London)

China’s military heads for Syria, supposedly to join Russia

Earlier this week, Chinese naval vessels have traveled through Egypt’s Suez Canal and entered the Mediterranean Sea. According to a senior officer in the Syrian Arab Army, and confirmed by a Russian Senator, the naval vessels are headed for Syria’s Port of Tartus, and that “China has joined [Russia’s] military operation in Syria.” The reports indicate that the Chinese vessels will reach Tartus within six weeks. No explanation is given for the long time frame.
From the point of view of Generational Dynamics, Chinese military cooperation with Russia in the Mideast is strongly counter to the predicted trends. As long-time readers are aware, the prediction is that the US and China would be the principal enemies in the approaching Clash of Civilizations world war, and that the US would be allied with India, Russia and Iran, while China would be allied with Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and other Sunni Muslim countries.
Such a strong counter-trend development — China joining Russia and Iran in defense of Bashar al-Assad, Saudi Arabia’s enemy — cannot continue indefinitely. In my opinion, there is something else going on that is not in the news reports — namely that it is much more likely that China’s military is entering the region to protect Saudi Arabia’s interests. China may cooperate with Russia for a while, but in my opinion it would not take a great deal for China to turn on Russia, in order to protect the Saudis. This will be an interesting development to watch. Pravda (Moscow) and Al-Masdar (pro-Syria) and MINA (Macedonia)

MEP's urge Greece to speed up completion of major projects
A team of MEPs appealed to Greek authorities on Friday to speed up the completion of large projects which have lagged behind and which will change the image of Greece, during a press conference at the offices of the European Parliament in Athens.
The team of eight MEPs from several countries and parliamentary groups was visiting the country as part of a finding mission organized by the European Parliament's Committee on Budgetary Control.
The MEPs visited seven major projects which have been described as “problematic” by the EU’s Task Force to Greece and which are extremely important for the country’s growth.
These include the Land Registry, whose completion is important for investments and environment interventions, the restoration of Karla Lake, which was described as the largest environmental project in the Balkans and for which the aim must remain to turn it into a drinking water reservoir. Another problematic project is the construction of the E65 highway, which the MEPs described as the cornerstone of European transport networks, as well as the rail project Tithorea – Domokos in central Greece.
The automatic fare collection system and the electronic Registry face no particular problems, but Thessaloniki’s metro is seen as deadlocked, with all MEPs expressing the view that a solution needs to be found noting that “a city the size of Brussels cannot be without public transportation.”
And while some problems are expected due to the economic crisis, the MEPs said, some others are unrelated and could be sped up by Greek authorities by “embracing them”.
