Germany holds urgent meeting to de-escalate tensions between Greece and Turkey

Θα είναι η καγκελάριος Μέρκελ, η Έλληνας πρωθυπουργός, ικανή να αντισταθεί στην πίεση ή θα υποχωρήσει; Αλλά αν παραδώσει και κάνει παραχωρήσεις, θα είναι σε θέση να αντισταθεί στην εξέγερση του λαού, διακινδυνεύοντας την απώλεια εξουσίας;

SManalysis
Link 7/14/2020

Kosovo President Hashim Thaci arrives in Hague-based Special Prosecutor's Office, where he will be questioned tomorrow, Pristina television Klan Kosova reports.

SOURCE: KOSOVO ONLINE SUNDAY, JULY 12, 2020 | 20:45

Thaci did not attend the meeting of the National Security Council of Kosovo today, which was chaired by the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Avdullah Hoti.

"According to our sources, Thaci did not participate in this meeting, because he left the airport in Tirana at around 3 pm to arrive for tomorrow's hearing in The Hague, where he will be defended by British lawyer Jeffrey Nice," Klan Kosova TV reports.

The indictment alleges that Thaci, the leader of the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK), Kadri Veselji, and others are suspected of about 100 murders.

The crimes presented in the draft indictment include hundreds of identified victims of Kosovo Albanians, Serbs, Roma and their political opponents. In December 2011, Swiss Senator Dick Marty published a report by the Council of Europe which listed several former leaders of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) who were involved in war crimes.

The Assembly of Kosovo adopted the law on the establishment of the Special Court in August 2015.

Greece to put sanctions on Turkey over Hagia Sophia conversion

UNESCO sent letter to Turkey regarding turning Hagia Sophia into a mosque

Greece will be putting sanctions against Turkey for its decision to convert Hagia Sophia into a mosque.

“Erdoğan made a historic mistake, a mistake that creates a gap, I hope it is not bridged,” government spokesman Stelios Petsas told SKAI earlier. Petsas emphasised that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan made a “wrong decision”.

“Greece condemns this action and will do everything in its power to have consequences for Turkey,” he said, adding that “everything is on the table and the possibility of sanctions not only from Europe but also from international organisations, such as UNESCO.”

He added that “there is no doubt that we will proceed with some form of sanctions,” without giving further details what these sanctions will entail.

“Anyone who violates international law must understand that for this delinquent behaviour there are sanctions that hurt,” said Petsas. “The issue of Hagia Sophia is an international issue. The only sure thing is that such a delinquent behaviour and such a great insult should have a similar response.”

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, provoked by the decision of Erdoğan to sign the decree for the conversion of Hagia Sophia into a mosque, in a written statement on Friday night expressed the unequivocal condemnation of Greece.

“Greece strongly condemns Turkey’s decision to turn Hagia Sophia into a mosque. This decision – and in fact 85 years since its proclamation as a museum – offends its universal character. It is a choice that also offends all those who recognise the monument as a property of world culture. And, of course, it affects not only Turkey’s relations with Greece. But also its relations with the European Union, UNESCO and the global community as a whole. It is unfortunate that the Turkish leadership, which worked for the Alliance of Civilizations in 2005, is now choosing to move in the opposite direction,” he said.

Dendias to the UN: Turkey is trying to usurp our sovereign rights through illegal agreements 2

At the UN Security Council meeting on Libya, Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias said that his country will do everything possible to uphold international law, achieve peace and stability in the Eastern Mediterranean.

The comments came amid an incandescent climate in Libya and the Turkish provocations which continue at a steady pace. In particular, he stated meaningfully that no discussion on Libya would have any effect in the midst of the illegal memorandum signed between Turkey and the Muslim Brotherhood Government of National Accords to steal Greek maritime space.

The UN Security Council on Libya, chaired by the German Presidency of the Council, discussed the progress of efforts for peace and a political solution.

“I reiterate our position that any solution, in order to be viable, must be Libyan-owned, based on international law and respect for human rights, always in the context of the relevant United Nations resolutions and conclusions of the Berlin Process, which is reinforced by the recent Cairo Initiative,” the Foreign Minister said.

He stressed the need to put an immediate end to foreign intervention and the observance of the arms embargo.

“Two parameters that fuel the conflict and have the unique effect of causing further instability in the country and the wider region,” Dendias said.

He made it clear that Greece actively supports the “UN efforts to achieve an immediate ceasefire and the return of negotiations, with a view to reaching a political solution. The stable goal of our country is peace in Libya and the establishment of security and stability in the wider region of the Eastern Mediterranean. And that includes our contacts, such as my meeting with the Speaker of the Libyan House of Representatives, Aguila Saleh, last week in Libya.”

UN Secretary-General António Guterres denounced “unprecedented foreign involvement” in Libya, with “the deployment of state-of-the-art equipment.”

Speaking during a Security Council teleconference, Guterres expressed concern about the reorganisation of military forces around the town of Sirte, located between Tripoli in the west and Benghazi in the east.

Militias of the Muslim Brotherhood Government of National Accords based in Tripoli, with significant external support, continue their course to the east and are now 25 km west of Sirte, he noted.

Erdogan Signs Decree Turning Hagia Sophia Into a Mosque

Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan issued a decree on Friday to formally declare  Hagia Sophia a mosque, mere minutes after Turkey’s administrative court annulled a 1934-dated decision that paved the way for the use of the 15-century-old structure as a museum.

Erdogan’s decree cited the Council of State’s verdict as the basis of his move for the transfer of the powers concerning the use of the Hagia Sophia to the Directorate of Religious Affairs (Diyanet).

In a message on Twitter, Erdogan offered his “best wishes” to the Directorate.

Turkish daily Hurriyet reports that crowds were observed to be gathered in front of the Hagia Sophia after news broke out on the status change.

Serbia: Sit-in anti-government protests; men in black try to provoke conflict

SManalysis

July 10, 2020.

After two nights of riots, anti-government demonstrators switch to a sit-in protest, differentiating themselves from those who provoked the police and who they believed were instructed by the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) led by President Aleksandar Vucic, N1 reported.

The sit-in protests in Belgrade and the northern city of Novi Sad don’t have any official organiser but start gathering after calls on social networks.

Some posts called on them to wear white shirts to be different from those who attack the police and usually wear hooded sweatshirts.

Later on Thursday, at several locations in Belgrade, young men dressed in black, wearing masks and singing songs about Kosovo as a part of Serbia, tried to force people who were sitting on the ground to stand up and radicalise the protest.

Journalists and analysts say they are far-rightists sent by politicians of such affiliation or even by the authorities to provoke the police reactions.

They did not succeed and peaceful protesters chased them away. But, as an N1 reporter said, it seemed they would not give up attempts to provoke incidents.

The leader of the opposition Democratic Party (DS) Zoran Lutovac told N1 that "Vucic is in Paris and a riot doesn't suit him now. If the regime wanted this to escalate, it would have escalated."

Earlier, some 150 police officers guarding the Parliament building in Belgrade also set down on the stairs following the example of the protesters, in a sign they would not react if the protest remained peaceful.

Serbia's Prime Minister Ana Brnabic said she was glad the protesters were peaceful on Thursday, but not happy because of the risk of spreading the coronavirus infection.
Earlier in the day, the Government introduced new measures including the ban of the public gatherings of more than ten people in Belgrade, as of Friday, the limit of the number of people in indoor areas to one person per four square meters just as it was during the state of emergency.

Earlier, a group of medical staff rallied outside the St Marko Church, the scene of brutal clashes between police and some people, to express dissatisfaction with the Government handling the epidemic crisis. They said the country’s health system almost collapsed.

After heavy clashes between some protesters and the strong police force over the last two nights, the opposition and analysts said those who attacked police officers were sent to do that. Their attacks caused bitter police reactions and the inappropriate use of force in many cases.

Some eyewitnesses said they saw a group of masked young men who threw things on the police who then responded with teargas, not at them but toward other protesters.

On Thursday night, hundreds of people rallied in the centre of Belgrade, outside the Parliament building and set on the ground, whistling and carrying banners reading ‘Don’t fall for it; Sit down,’ ‘Arrest hooligans, don’t beat your people.’

The police stopped traffic in the main street, and only a few of them were seen guarding the building which was also protected by a metal fence.

A similar scene is seen in Novi Sad, where people are peacefully sitting in the main square.
The mainly young people also carry banners and flags.

One of them told the crowd: “I don’t ask for anything more, just for a normal life for our children and us.”

A crowd then went to the central police station where Miran Pogacar, an activist, was held after being arrested on Wednesday night and would be held in 48-hour detention.
People in several other towns and cities across Serbia also organised the sit-in protests where demonstrators chanted slogans against Vucic and his SNS.

PRISTINA, Kosovo (AP) — Veterans of a rebel army that fought for Kosovo's independence from Serbia held protests Thursday against the indictment of the country’s president on war crimes and crimes against humanity charges stemming from the conflict in the late 1990s.

Ninety-nine Kosovo Liberation Army veterans, symbolically representing the year the 1998-99 war in Kosovo ended, gathered at a main square in the capital of Pristina and other cities to denounce the indictment of President Hashim Thaci as “unfair” and promoted by Serbia.

“Such acts from this court do not positively impact the reconciliation in the Western Balkans,” the head of a war veterans’ organization, Hysni Gucati, said.

A prosecutor of an international court set up in The Hague but applying Kosovo laws issued the indictment, which alleges Thaci and other former KLA members are criminally responsible for nearly 100 murders of Serbs, Roma and Kosovo Albanian political opponents during and after the war with Serbia.
The indictment also includes charges of forced disappearances, persecution and torture.
Thaci, a former KLA commander, denies any responsibility for alleged war crimes but said Wednesday he would go to The Hague on Monday to be questioned by prosecutors.

A pretrial judge at Kosovo Specialist Chambers hasn’t made a decision on whether to proceed with the case or throw it out.
Thaci has said that if the indictment stands, he “will immediately resign as your president and face the accusations.”
The fighting in Kosovo left more than 10,000 dead, most of them ethnic Albanians. It ended after a 78-day NATO air campaign in 1999 that forced Serbian troops to stop their brutal crackdown against ethnic Albanians and leave Kosovo.

Following the announcement of Thaci’s indictment, a White House meeting between the leaders of Kosovo and Serbia that was organized by U.S. presidential envoy Richard Grenell was postponed.
Kosovo Prime Minister Avdullah Hoti and Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic are scheduled to meet Sunday for European Union-supervised talks in Brussels, the first negotiations to normalize relations between the two countries in 20 months.

Entire staff at Albanian Embassy in Athens fired 2

The acting Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Gent Cakaj, fired all the staff of the Albanian embassy in Athens, including the ambassador.

This was due to the embassy’s poor performance and services to the Albanian community, according to Albanian media.

Without wasting time, Minister Cakaj also found a replacement for the dismissed ambassador, Ardiana Hobdari.

The Albanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs proposed Luela Hajdaragaj, as Albania’s ambassador to Athens.

Meanwhile, Air Albania which is 49% owned by Turkish airlines, is launching a number of European services this month.

Air Albania will begin routes to the Italian cities of Bergamo, Pisa and Verona from July 13. This will be followed by Frankfurt on July 20, and London Stansted on July 26.

Is Donald Trump "closing the door" on the Mitsotakis government?

Greek PM Mitsotakis to Attend Working Lunch with US President ...
JULY 9, 20209

Athens continues to strongly support Angela Merkel's personal European course in the Balkans and the Mediterranean, damaging national interests with the United States.

In 30 years, as never before, the Mitsotakis Junior Government has abandoned the National Issue of Northern Epirus, leaving the territory to the Albanian Mafia and oligarchs, supporting Merkel's policies to join Albania in the EU, and selling their brothers. in Northern Epirus.

As a response to President Trump's government's resentment of Prime Minister Mitsotaki's government over the Greek government's repeated insults and attacks on the President of the United States, it is considered unacceptable by the US government to allow the Minister. of the Greek Defense to carry out an official programmed visit to Washington.

It is the second time that the visit has been canceled, but Greek Minister Panagiotopoulos justifies this decision, due to the situation with coronavirus.

It is obvious, and of course there is no reason in these moments, that due to pandemic, the US government will not agree to hold a closed meeting with the Greek Minister of Defense, while other visits have been made by heads of state and senior government officials. from other countries, these last weeks, in the US.

What does this mean?

It means that the US government lacks the will to enter into discussions with the Greek Minister of Defense and listen to his theses and positions, or even to dispose of someone from the US President's administration to hold courtesy talks.

On July 20 and 21, the Greek Defense Minister had scheduled an official visit to Washington, hosted by his American counterpart Mark Esper. This meeting was once scheduled for March 23, but was canceled due to pandemic, but today, it is canceled again, for the same reason according to the version of the Greek government.

The US side expressed indifference and reluctance to hold a face-to-face meeting between the two defense counterparts and other Trump administration ministers, leaving a "webinar" as a contact version for the Greek side, namely an online meeting.

The current American "cross" to the Greek side, telling her: "Don't call, we will call you."

It remains to be seen whether the online meeting will take place, because even that is not certain yet.

Both Trump and top administration officials "don't even want to look him in the eye" the Athens government, which they consider a "servant" of Berlin, with almost zero chance of pursuing an independent policy in Greece and wider in the Mediterranean Region.

Most conservative right-wingers in Greece consider it an insult not to meet with counterparts because of the Greek prime minister's misguided foreign policy and his commitment to the German chancellor, while his first strategic ally, partner and country. Greece has been and must remain a friend of Greece.

The time has come for Greece to look to America and the Trump administration and break free from the dependencies of a European Union in ruin and existential crisis, with member states that have essentially lost their sovereignty as they are run and ordered by the German chancellery. Source

Albanians continue racist attacks against Greek minority in Northern Epirus

Albanians continue racist attacks against Greek minority in Northern Epirus 2
by PAUL ANTONOPOULOS

Racist attacks against the Greek minority in Albania continue to occur unabated and with little interest from the police and the central government.

Evangelos Doules (Ευάγγελος Δούλες) who is also known by his Albanian name Vangjel Dule, revealed the racist actions against the Greeks of Northern Epirus in southern Albania, on social media.

He posted on Twitter that “for days now, most of the bilingual signs, placed by the road authority along the national road that runs through the municipality of Finiki [Φοινίκη, Albanian: Finiq], have erased the names in Greek, the mother tongue of members of the Greek ethnic minority. This phenomenon does not occur for the first time.”

The chairman of the Unity for Human Rights Party that represents the Greek minority in the Albanian parliament continued to explain on Twitter that “It constitutes a criminal offense. 2. It violates the spirit and the letter of domestic law and international conventions on the rights of minorities, 3. It proves and incites ethnic hatred.”

He then said “Our call is for a genuinely European political spectrum, a healthy public opinion and the media to work together to put an end to such phenomena, the perpetrators and their instigators,” before adding photos of bilingual signs that had Greek erased.

Meanwhile, the tourist season in Northern Epirus in southern Albania, specifically in the Greek town of Himarra (Χειμάρρα, Albanian: Himarë) may turn into a conflict between the indigenous Greeks of the region, and Albanian authorities and the mafia this year. This is in addition to the coronavirus pandemic and an increase number of robberies against the local Greeks, as reported by Greek City Times.

Himarra is one of the most northern towns of Northern Epirus that has been Greek for thousands of years but was awarded to the newly formed Albanian state after the Balkan Wars in the early 20th century despite the Greek Army liberating the majority-Greek region.

SManalysis

Foreign Minister: Greece is developing a national strategy against the challenges 2

Greece has a say and a role in the region and the ability to effectively deal with any intrusion as it is forming a national strategy against challenges, Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias said in an article in Sunday’s Free Press newspaper.

As the Foreign Minister pointed out, “from the first day of [Prime Minister] Kyriakos Mitsotakis’ rule, it became clear that our goal was a foreign policy with a sense of patriotic responsibility and national solidarity, which has turned its back on the grievances of the powerless and fraternal nation.”

Dendias analysed the alliances that Greece has created in the region, an environment of security and mutual understanding, as well as the bilateral strategic relations it has developed with countries such as the United States, France and Israel.

In particular, he recalled the signing of the updated MDCA agreement with the United States, which expands the US geostrategic footprint in Greece and the visit of US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. He also mentioned the strategic partnership with France, but also the signing of the agreement on the delimitation of maritime zones with Italy, which “is another practical proof of an active foreign policy, guided by a clear strategy and based on international law and Charter Law of the Sea.”

At the same time, a Dendias pointed out, Greece is strengthening the existing tripartite cooperation schemes in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Gulf region, by creating the five-member Greece-Egypt-Cyprus-France-UAE scheme, while at the same time cultivating policies of understanding with important countries in the region.

Greece rejuvenated its relations with North Africa, with Dendias visiting Egypt, Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia, and returning to multilateral diplomacy, participating for the first time in major initiatives beyond its region, such as the Sahel.

“In this regard, we have gained an effective channel of communication with the leadership of the Libyan House of Representatives and the Libyan National Army. We are systematically developing our contacts with the Permanent Members of the OHE Security Council, while expanding our country’s diplomatic presence with the targeted opening of new embassies,” he explained.

“We are proving every day that we believe in an extroverted, strong ally and partner in Greece. A Greece that with confidence in its forces faces with confidence any kind of challenge,” the Foreign Minister concluded.

In the last decade, almost half of Albanians have immigrated to the EU

SManalysis
During the period 2008-2018, 44 percent of the Albanian population migrated to the European Union, taking the lead in the Western Balkan region, according to local media.

According to the latest report by the European Policy Institute of Kosovo, a total 1,249,706 Albanian citizens migrated to the EU during the ten-year period, 16 percent of whom were found to be illegally present in the EU – more than the number of citizens of all other countries put together.

The report notes that Albania leads the region, by far, in all three categories of migration; during 2008-2018, a total of 451,015 citizens of Albania were found to be illegally present in the EU – this is more than the number of citizens of all other countries put together. To put it differently, 16 percent of Albania's population were found to be present illegally in the EU during 2008-2018. Albania also led the region with 622,171 citizens who received first time residence permit in the EU, which represents 39 percent of the entire region.

Furthermore, Albania led the region in the number of entry refusals in the EU. During 2008-2018, 332,470 Western Balkans citizens were refused entry into the EU, 170,450 of whom were from Albania. This is more than the citizens of the entire region put together.

On the other hand, migration numbers in the rest countries of the region are significantly less staggering; 30 percent of the Kosovo population migrated to EU, only 6 percent in Montenegro, 12 percent in North Macedonia, 8 percent in Serbia and 9 percent in Bosnia-Herzegovina.

However data from the report is based on the number of asylum applications, which means that the real number could be much larger.

According to the European Agency for Asylum (EASO) report, Albania continued to be among the top ten countries with the highest number of asylum seekers in Europe in 2019. Albania ranked behind Iraq, Pakistan, Turkey, Iran and Nigeria in the number of asylum applications.

The decline in births and natural population growth in Albania, year after year, is seen as a worrying phenomenon by demographic researchers. They have constantly warned that the country is in a "demographic emergency" and have sought intervention measures, especially to curb immigration and improve the economic and social conditions of Albanian families.
