Hellenic Navy 's 6th Roussen-class FAC arrives Salamis base after ...
Other warships in the base welcomed HS Karathanasis

July 3, 2020.

Hellenic Navy’s newest Roussen-class (Super Vita) guided missile fast patrol boat HS Karathanasis (pennant number: P-78) arrived Salamis Naval Base after performing sea trials, Hellenic Navy announced. The commissioning of HS Karathansis is scheduled in July.

Full operational integration of the ship is intended to be completed after the ship joined to the Fleet of the Hellenic Navy.

The Roussen class is a seven-strong class of British-design fast attack missile boats improved and customized for the Hellenic Navy, also known as Super Vita.

The design of the 62 meters fast attack craft is based on the smaller Vita class vessels already in service with the Qatar Emiri Navy and similar-sized craft built for Oman and other countries.

The first three vessels are armed with the MBDA (formerly EADS Aerospatiale-Matra) Exocet ITL 70A MM40 block II surface-to-surface missile. The following four vessels have the Exocet block III version. The vessel’s air defence missile system is the RAM (rolling airframe missile), to be supplied by RAMSYS, a consortium of MBDA (formerly EADS Daimler-Chrysler Aerospace), Diehl and BGT.

The craft’s main gun installed on the bow deck is the Oto Melara Super Rapid 76mm gun which is capable of firing 6kg shells at a rate of 100 rounds a minute to a range of 16km. Two Oto Melara 30mm guns are installed on either side of the upper deck to the stern of the main radar mast.

The vessel’s sensor suite includes the Thales MW08 3D G-band surveillance radar, Thales Nederland Mirador electro-optical target tracker, an integrated Thales Nederland Scout mkII low probability of intercept radar and Northrop Grumman (formerly Litton) Marine Bridgemaster-E navigation radar.

MP Karamelos: The Albanian state puts huge pressure on us Greeks of Northern Epirus

MP Karamelos: The Albanian state puts huge pressure on us Greeks of Northern Epirus 4

Grigoris Karamelos, a Greek MP for Korytsa (Κορυτσά: Albanian: Korçë) in Albania, during an interview with Channel One on the “Logos kai Antiologos” show with Nikos Paraskeva, said that the Greeks of Northern Epirus are facing difficult moments because of Prime Minister Edi Rama and his government.

He said “on the one hand, Albania wants to join the European Union without meeting the criteria for membership and on the other hand it maintains close relations with Turkey.”

Karamelos spoke about the national hatred of the Albanian state against the indigenous Greeks of Northern Epirus in southern Albania, which is most evident through the management of the property issue, mainly regarding the Himarra (Χειμάρρα, Albanian: Himarë) coast, in order to alter the Greek-majority of the region to an Albanian one.

He also referred to the immigration problem where a law on the granting of political asylum to refugees is to be voted on for the first time in the Parliament. According to Albanian media, there is an agreement between Rama and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to relocate 30,000 refugees and illegal immigrants from Turkey to Albania in the region of Northern Epirus where up to 120,000 indigenous Greeks live, as reported by Greek City Times in April.

Although Greece liberated Northern Epirus during the First Balkan War (1912-13), the Great Powers gifted the region to the new Albanian state. Greece would once again liberate the region, that has been majority inhabited by Greeks for thousands of years, in World War Two, but it was once again gifted to Albania by the Great Powers.

MP Karamelos: The Albanian state puts huge pressure on us Greeks of Northern Epirus 4
Karamelos spoke about the propaganda carried out in the region of Korytsa by both Romania and Bulgaria in villages in the region, in view of the census, which was to take place in October 2020 but was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“We need a lot of preparation for the census whenever it happens, because we are a large percentage. In the 2011 census, 25,000 Greeks declared themselves Greek in Korytsa, but the Albanian state counted only 2,000,” he said.

“Greece must monitor the developments and support us,” said Karamelos, who also referred to the political situation of the National Greek Minority, emphasising that the situation requires unity by all Greeks.

He also raised the issue of propaganda on Albanian television channels, which completely distorts history.

“After we managed to keep our roots and our tradition during the Hoxha dictatorship, we can do it now,” said Korytsas, a Greek lawmaker, presenting proposals on how the Greek state can help Greeks in northern Epirus.

However, as he pointed out, “Greece is now sitting and the Bulgarians are financing…”

However, Romania and Albania are both colluding to Romanianise Vlahoi Greeks. Although the majority of the Latin-speaking Vlahoi in Albania identify as Greek, Romania is working very hard to Romanianise them and in 2013, a Romanian Information Center  opened up in Korytsa that teaches the Romanian language, culture and heritage for free – and on top of that, even offer some students free travel to European Union member state, Romania.

In order to put pressure on the Greek minority in Northern Epirus and control the social awakening of Hellenism, Albania recognised a Romanian-Vlahoi minority in 2012. Romania believes that because the Vlahoi speak a language similar to Romanian, they are in fact Romanian and not Greek, as reported by Greek City Times.

As Albania knows it occupies Northern Epirus, which seeks union with Greece, weakening Greek identity with strong Romanian backing serves a powerful agenda for both of their countries.

He illustrated the speech with footage from the KLA war and the 1999 bombing of Serbia.

Rama gave full support to the former KLA leaders, and his visit to Pristina is obviously dedicated to collecting political points on national motives.

"I'm getting tired from counting post-war statements about the need to create a new court. Serbs were not bombed by Thaci and Veseli. The democratic world is not an aggressor, and Thaci and others rebelled against the aggressor. That is a fact," Rama told lawmakers at the last session of the Albanian parliament, Koha reports.

In the description of the video, Rama wrote: "Good morning from Pristina, I wish you all a good day."

EU borders likely closed to US travellers and others

EU borders likely closed to US travellers and others 2
by PAUL ANTONOPOULOS

European Union member states have drawn up a list of safe non-EU countries to open borders to.

14 non-EU countries and four states can enter the EU, including those coming from Australia, Canada, South Korea, Japan and Serbia, as well as North African countries such as Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria.

In contrast, the United States, Russia, Brazil, Turkey, North Macedonia and Albania were excluded from the list.

The list also includes China, provided it implements a reciprocity policy and allows EU nationals to travel to China.

The crucial criterion for inclusion in the list was the epidemiological data of the countries under consideration, which had to be corresponding or lower than the EU average (16 cases / 100,000 population in the first fortnight of June). However, some Member States have sought to include countries with the highest number of cases, such as Portugal’s persistence, which was ineffective, to include Brazil in the second phase of the list.

For Athens, further delays in opening up to the rest of the world threatens to deal another major blow in efforts to save the tourist season. Greece in meetings with permanent representatives of the member states, expressed strong objections to the prospect of further extension of travel bans.

Yesterday afternoon, the Greek government announced that it would open the country’s gates to the rest of the world, with the exception of nine countries, signalling its intention to move unilaterally.

Countries that, under different circumstances, would be its natural allies in pursuing the fastest possible opening, have taken a more cautious stance due to the severe health blow suffered by the pandemic. Italy has been particularly cautious in its discussions, noting that the opening of the Schengen area was enough for tourist movements and that there was no reason to take any further risk by opening the external borders.

Spain, for its part, despite being in a better position to Italy, made it clear that it did not intend to open unilaterally unless there was an agreement. “It is a vital agreement at the European level,” the Spanish government spokesman said yesterday.

However, there are concerns that the list needs to be updated every two weeks.

Northern countries such as Sweden, Denmark (which originally intended to keep its borders closed even with EU countries until August 31), Finland and the Netherlands made sure the initial list of countries was small enough.

“It is important for us that there is an agreement at a European level to open the borders and that this agreement is based solely on health criteria,” a Dutch diplomat said.

In case of disagreement and unilateral opening of Member States to third countries, he warned, “we may be forced to close our borders” to that Member State.

Border policy is the responsibility of Member States. The European Commission since the beginning of the health crisis has taken steps to promote the coordination of Member States in this area and to restore free movement within the Schengen area – but with limited success. Union member states have reacted to the coronavirus outbreak in Europe by closing their borders even to other Schengen members.

He added that he could not elaborate on the details because it would make Serbia's position worse and put the American partners in an awkward position.

General Alkiviadis Stefanis to Turkey: We are not afraid of anything and are ready for all scenarios 2

Deputy Minister of Defence, General Alkiviadis Stefanis spoke on Open TV‘s main news bulletin yesterday and was asked about the statements made by the Turkish Defence Minister Hulusi Akar who simultaneously threatened Greece while also asking for dialogue.

“There are different levels and different ways of dealing with it. Mr. Akar chooses this way. On the one hand he threatens us and on the other he calls for us to talk,” Stefanis said. “We are ready to discuss. After all, we are discussing at different levels, but at the same time we are doing our job and doing it right.”

“You see exactly what is happening in the European Union, you see our interventions in NATO, you see our bilateral relations. An entire organisation, such as the government, is trying to inform about national positions at all levels and at the same time to be prepared at all levels for every eventuality,” the Deputy Defence Minister stressed.

When asked if he believes that the possibility of a hot episode could eventuate, Stefanis emphasised that “We are not afraid of anything, because we are aware of our potential, whose training we are doing and why we are examining multiple scenarios every day. You’ve seen one of these evolve over the last two days. Without any warning, the head of the Greek military was ordered to implement a plan and it was implemented in the best way,” he said, referring to the aeronautical exercise that took place for the first time in a sea area of the illegal Turkish-Libyan Muslim Brotherhood memorandum.

“The preparation is different at different levels. Each power pillar in the country has a different mission. Ours has two areas: defence diplomacy, which we saw evolving when we briefed the High Representative on what is happening in Evros and the Ministry of National Defence, and that of the Armed Forces. The Armed Forces and the Ministry of National Defence have shown the potential of Greece. We presented an opportunity. Everyday the Armed Forces are trained in various scenarios and various threats are implemented. So here we have shown that this possibility also exists.”

Stefanis referred to the different levels of messages that each exercise sends, saying that one is internal and concerns self-confidence and training, and that the second message is to the Greek people that the Armed Forces are strong, while the third is to outsiders.

“We tell them, look what opportunities we have. Our potential is enormous and very strong. We know what we are doing and we are doing it well. The Armed Forces have a very big secret: passion and love for the homeland is the way they carry out their mission,” he said.

Pranoi mandatin e deputetit, Ligoraq Karamelo kërcënohet me jetë ...

Ερώτηση: Ποια είναι η κατάσταση του Ελληνισμού σήμερα στην περιοχή;

Ερώτηση: Με το περιουσιακό τι γίνεται;

Ερώτηση: Τι προβλήματα αντιμετωπίζετε στην άσκηση των καθηκόντων σας ως βουλευτής στην εκλογική σας περιφέρεια αλλά και στην πρωτεύουσα, στα Τίρανα;

Ερώτηση: Ποια ήταν η αντίδραση του κόσμου στις προσπάθειές σας;

Ερώτηση: Σήμερα αντιμετωπίζετε προβλήματα στην άσκηση των καθηκόντων σας ως βουλευτής;

Ερώτηση: Ποιο είναι κατά την άποψή σας το πιο σοβαρό πρόβλημα που αντιμετωπίζει ο Ελληνισμός της Αλβανίας σήμερα;

Ερώτηση: Τι σας ανησυχεί περισσότερο σήμερα στην Αλβανία;

Europol says all terrorist attacks in Greece last year were by anarchists 3

The European Union Agency for Law Enforcement Cooperation, better known under the name Europol, released its European Union Terrorism Situation and Trend Report for 2020.

The report explains that the terrorists’ ultimate goal is to undermine societies and democratic political systems, and that it generates fear, empowers political extremes and polarises societies.

Europol’s report pulls together facts and figures on terrorist attacks and arrests in the EU in 2019, and found that:

A total of 119 foiled, failed and completed terrorist attacks were reported by a total of 13 EU Member States
1,004 individuals were arrested on suspicion of terrorism-related offences in 19 EU Member States, with Belgium, France, Italy, Spain and the UK reporting the highest numbers
Ten people died because of terrorist attacks in the EU and 27 people were injured
In Greece, there were only three jihadists arrested, an extremely low number considering 202 were arrested in France, 56 in Spain, 43 in Austria, 32 in Germany and 27 in the Netherlands.

Europol says all terrorist attacks in Greece last year were by anarchists 4
Europol says all terrorist attacks in Greece last year were by anarchists 4
The Europol report recounted one incident last October, when a Syrian was identified as appearing in an ISIS propaganda video showing an execution. He admitted to being an ISIS member and appearing in the video.

Although the number of Islamic-inspired terrorist attacks in Greece was non-existent, the report said that “the number of left-wing and anarchist terrorist attacks in 2019 (26) reached the level of 2016 and 2017 after a decrease in 2018. All attacks took place in Greece, Italy or Spain,” adding that these three countries continue to “be the epicentre for attacks carried out by left-wing and anarchist terrorists.”

Four left-wingers and anarchists were arrested last year in Greece relating to two terrorist attacks.

The report listed the Greek Revolutionary Organisation 17 November as an example of a left-wing terrorist group and Synomosia Pyrinon tis Fotias (‘Conspiracy of Cells of Fire’) as an anarchist one.

Europol explains that “in 2019 Articles 187A, 187B and 187Γ of the Greek Penal Code, covering terrorism offences, were amended by virtue of Article 1 of the Greek Law 4619/2019 and Article 3 of the Greek Law 4637/2019, in accordance with the Directive (EU) 2017/541 of the European Parliament and of the Council of the EU.”

– Πως προτίθεται να διασφαλίσει την εκπλήρωση εκ μέρους της Αλβανίας των υποχρεώσεών της όσον αφορά το περιουσιακό;

– Τι μέτρα σκοπεύει να λάβει ώστε να προστατεύσει το θεμελιώδες δικαίωμα στην ιδιοκτησία των Αλβανών πολιτών και να διασφαλίσει την παραμονή της Ελληνικής Εθνικής Μειονότητας στις πατρογονικές της εστίες;

Vucic: I expect that Serbia will become a member of the European Union by 2026

Today, the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, is visiting Brussels, where he is meeting with high representatives of the European Union.

SOURCE: B92, TANJUG FRIDAY, JUNE 26, 2020

He addressed public in front of the Serbian Embassy in Brussels.

Vucic said that talks were held about important things that he talked about directly.

"It seemed to me that we had a very important conversation. One of the essential things in our policy must be about accelerating European integration, which I discussed today with the EU High Representatives", he said.

He announced the continuation of the dialogue and the acceleration of Serbia's European integration.

"We expect the continuation of the dialogue soon, and prior to that, the Summit will be attended by representatives of the two countries important for the continuation of the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina, but also our integration. I think the essence of Serbia and the EU is how to speed up Serbia's European path guarantees from the EU, that if it meets the conditions, it will get the green light to join EU", he said.

He stated that he was in communication with Lajcak on a daily basis and that he had talked with him about relations with Pristina.

"The most important thing for us is to be restrained. We know that terrible crimes have taken place. It is good that there is justice for them, but with restraining from other comment, we are protecting our people in Kosovo. It is easy for us in Belgrade and difficult for people in Strpce and other places", Vucic stated.

Vucic expects that by 2026, Serbia will become a member of the European Union.

"I am convinced that we are entering the new phase of relations with the EU with optimism. I believe that we will complete negotiations with the EU by the end of the new government's mandate, which means that it would be realistic to become an EU member state by 2026. That is my opinion, my hope", he said.

He conveyed that there were talks on infrastructural connections within the region, as well as on the financial means that would belong to Serbia in the coming period from the so-called two "pockets" of the EU.

"IPA funds are one thing, and not a small amount of money. The second is guarantee schemes, that is, guarantees, which is also a lot of money, "he explained, adding that the third thing is projects for the entire region, since the EU's idea is to connect all the capitals of the Balkans by highway.

According to him, it is a combination of what the Berlin Process represented from the beginning.

"These are things that are of essential importance to us, but talks with Pristina are of key importance so that we can expect that financial aid", Vucic said.

He indicated that he expects talks with Pristina to continue in two to three weeks.

He conveyed that he talked with EU officials about the situation in Pristina, what we can expect and what their conditions might look like.

He pointed out that he also talked with the EU Special Envoy for dialogue Miroslav Lajčák about all important topics and that now, after the visit to Belgrade, they established communication on a daily basis.

He said that the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, was very prepared for the meeting and that he was grateful to her for the attention she paid to Serbia.

He said that he invited her to visit Serbia and expressed his belief that she would do it before the end of the year, when the coronavirus crisis passes.

Ο ίδιος επεσήμανε ότι πιστεύει ότι η στάση αυτή του Δικαστηρίου πόνεσε την Αλβανία. Αλλά, πως μπορείτε να κατηγορήσετε ένα δικαστήριο που διαλεύκανε τόσο βίαια εγκλήματα πολέμου για εθνικισμό;

Former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt said that Kosovo President Hashim Thaci will be arrested if the indictment against him is confirmed

SOURCE: TANJUG FRIDAY, JUNE 26, 2020 | 09:52

In a statement for GZERO Media, he estimated that, if there is a trial, witness protection will be "quite a problem", Kosovo online reported last night.

1"If the indictment, which is published, is confirmed, then he will face arrest. And he will have to go to The Hague and face a long and complicated trial where witness protection will be quite a problem. It will take several years. And without a doubt, this will upset Kosovo's policy", Bildt said.

A spokesman for the Special Prosecutor's Office in The Hague, Christopher Bennett, said that the Prosecutor's Office had filed a ten-count indictment with the Kosovo Specialist Chambers (KSC) accusing Hashim Thaci and President of the Democratic Party of Kosovo Kadri Veseli and others of crimes against humanity and war crimes, including murder, forced disappearance of persons, persecution and torture.

Pristina is a big factor of insecurity at the moment, said former EU Special Envoy for Kosovo Wolfgang Petritsch

SOURCE: TANJUG THURSDAY, JUNE 25, 2020 | 11:20

At the same time, Petrisch believes that it would be good for President Aleksandar Vucic to go to Washington and previously to Brussels, as a prudent politician who confirms that there is no solution without the EU.

"Kosovo currently has a very weak government and that is a big problem. In Belgrade, after the elections, the government has been significantly strengthened and has a stronger position in the assembly, and it would have in the case of a referendum. That is not the case in Pristina," Petritsch told Tanjug.

The former High Representative of the international community in Bosnia-Herzegovina believes that the announcement of the indictment against Thaci weakened the government even more, reminding that the new government was formed with the support of Thaci's party.

It also points to the growing popularity of Albin Kurti. Because of all that, Petritsch is convinced that sooner or later there will be elections in Kosovo.

The former ambassador of Austria to Serbia says that the indictment against Thaci has been looming since Dick Marty's report to the Council of Europe. "It took too long, but international justice is slow," said Petritsch, who said that he personally advocated the establishment of a special court for crimes committed from 1998 to 2000.

Now, as he points out, everyone must take note of the decision of the Prosecutor's Office, and it starts from the fact that Thaci, following the previous example of Ramush Haradinaj, will resign.

As for Serbia, he says that it should continue to work on finding a solution and that it should decide for itself who will be its representative in the dialogue, since the Constitutional Court in Pristina opted for the prime minister.

"I think it would be efficient for the whole process that this role is assumed by Serbian President Aleksandra Vucic, while technical issues can be transferred to the expert level," he explained.

When it comes to the announced plan of the US President Donald Trump's Special Envoy for Kosovo, Richard Grenell, which was supposed to be discussed in Washington on Saturday, Petritsch says that he is skeptical and thinks that it is impossible to start with economic issues without seeking a political solution.

"Who will invest in a region that has such a difficult unresolved problem? None or few of them," he stated.

"The economy is important, but how can you imagine any progress, foreign investments and jobs if there is no political compromise?", Petritsch wondered.

"A clear framework is necessary to solve this conflict, and only then, the two sides could build confidence. Only after that can we start a new future between Belgrade and Pristina," Petritsch said, adding he didn't believe that Grenell's formula – first economy, and then dealing with political issues, "can work".

He says that it is necessary to deal with economic issues, but also that the area must have a clear "European seal". Petritsch thinks that it is good that President Vucic is going to Washington and previously to Brussels, thus proving that he is a prudent politician who confirms that there is no solution without the EU.

He emphasizes that the EU must be absolutely more active and must take the lead in the region. "The EU must not leave the leadership in the region to others, including the United States, but also to the Russians and Chinese who have their own political and economic interests. The EU must have a clear leading role there," Petritsch underlined, adding that he supports EU Special Envoy Miroslav Lajcak and his intention to find a solution to the Kosovo issue in the foreseeable future.

'Kosovo's war was just and liberating', Avdullah Hoti boycotts meeting with Vucic in US

Just a few minutes ago, the Prime Minister of Koso'Lufta e Kosovës ishte e drejtë dhe çlirimtare', Avdullah Hoti bojkoton takimin me Vuçiç në SHBAvo, Avdullah Hoti, stated that he would not attend the June 27 meeting in Washington.

The decision follows accusations by The Hague Special Court against President Hashim Thaci and Kadri Veseli, who are accused of war crimes.

Hoti says that he will return to Kosovo to deal with the situation, while he says that he has also informed Ambassador Grenell.

Earlier, Hoti came out in support of Thaçi and Veseli, saying that the war in Kosovo was just and liberating.

"Due to the new developments in Pristina as a result of the accusations submitted by the Office of the Specialized Prosecutor, I have to return to Pristina to deal with the situation.

I have informed Ambassador Grenell that he cannot attend the June 27 meeting at the White House, "Hoti said.

Kosovo president Hashim Thaçi indicted on war crimes charges

Court examining crimes during 1998-99 war also charges nine other former separatist fighters

A prosecutor investigating crimes committed during Kosovo‘s 1998-99 independence war with Serbia has indicted Kosovo’s president, Hashim Thaçi, for crimes against humanity and war crimes.

The indictment was announced as Thaçi was on his way to Washington for a White House meeting with Serbia’s president organised by Richard Grenell, Donald Trump’s controversial ambassador to Germany who was also appointed as the administration’s Balkan peace envoy.

The meeting had been scheduled for Saturday, but Grenell announced on Twitter on Wednesday evening that Thaçi had cancelled his visit following the announcement. “I respect his decision not to attend the discussions until the legal issues of those allegations are settled,” Grenell wrote. Kosovo’s new prime minister, Avdullah Hoti, will represent the country at the White House meeting.

Trump is hoping to gain a diplomatic victory by brokering a deal between the two countries, which have not normalised relations since Kosovo broke away from Serbia following a Nato bombing campaign in 1999. Kosovo declared independence in 2008 but this is not recognised by Serbia. Nor is Kosovo a member of the UN or other major international bodies.

The surprise announcement on Wednesday by the prosecutor’s office at the Kosovo specialist chambers in the Hague appeared designed to scupper chances for a White House deal that could make Thaçi politically untouchable.

The prosecutor’s statement said Thaçi and nine other former commanders in the Kosovo Liberation Army, which fought a guerrilla campaign against Serb forces before the Nato intervention, had been indicted in April.

The indictment is for a range of crimes against humanity and war crimes, including murder, enforced disappearance, persecution and torture. It says the group is criminally responsible for nearly 100 murders, and notes that the victims were Serbs, Kosovo Albanians and other ethnicities, and included political opponents.

Wednesday’s statement makes it clear that the pre-trial judge had not yet confirmed the charges, but the prosecutor’s office said it was taking the unusual step of making the charges public before that point because of Thaçi’s repeated efforts to “obstruct and undermine” the court’s work.

“I assume the prosecutor got permission from the court to do this,” said Clint Williamson, a former US special envoy on war crimes who led the Kosovo investigation which formed the basis for the charges.

“When I released the preliminary investigative findings back in 2014, I cited concerns about witness intimidation and other efforts to obstruct the investigation, and there is every indication that this has continued,” he said. “The release of the public announcement of the indictment seems to reflect the ongoing concerns about that.”

The Kosovo specialist chambers were established in 2015 through an amendment to the Kosovo constitution and the passing of a special law to establish its jurisdiction. It came after the EU special investigation that Williamson led found “compelling” evidence of systemic war crimes carried out by the KLA leadership.

Thaçi did not immediately comment on the indictment, but a spokesman confirmed that he had been on his way to Washington at the time it was made public. In an interview with the Guardian in 2018, Thaçi said: “We believe the special court was unnecessary and unfair, but because of our relationship with the EU and the US we decided to support it.”

The prosecutor’s statement accuses Thaçi and Kadri Veseli, the former speaker of Kosovo’s parliament, of carrying out a secret campaign to overturn the law setting up the court in an attempt to obstruct its work and evade trial. “By taking these actions, Mr Thaçi and Mr Veseli have put their personal interests ahead of the victims of their crimes, the rule of law, and all people of Kosovo,” it said.

There has been uneasiness in the international community at the length of time the specialist chambers has taken to produce indictments, and concern that Thaçi could be more amenable to signing a deal with Serbia brokered by Trump in order to lessen the chance of being summoned by the court.

“I think Thaçi is hoping he can deliver something to the administration so they will give him some kind of pass on the prosecution,” a former US diplomat who was based in the region said before the news that the talks had been cancelled. “But I just don’t know how that would work.”

The US secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, wrote a formal letter to Thaçi in March supporting the work of the Kosovo court and telling him not to try to obstruct its work.

“The abolishment or undermining the work, structure or locations of Kosovo specialist chambers and specialist prosecutor’s office in any way would seriously infringe Kosovo’s credibility in the world,” Pompeo said, according to a leaked copy of the letter. “Any such claim would leave a permanent spot on Kosovo, its commitment to the rule of law would be under question, justice for victims would be denied and Kosovo’s future would be blurred.”

The former diplomat said that even if the Trump administration were to give Thaçi license to ignore the indictment, that stance would be likely to be reversed if Joe Biden were to win the US presidential election in November. When Biden was vice-president he wrote a letter to Thaçi telling him the US required him to cooperate with the Kosovo chambers.

Both Grenell and the EU had been pushing talks between Thaçi and the Serbian president, Aleksandar Vučić, but they are now likely to be stalled indefinitely.
