Greek officials are concerned about the threats coming from the military reservists and paramilitary organizations. In a country ravaged by internal strife, economic hardships and political clashes, the army is seen as a potential source of instability and a threat to the government.

Antonis Samaras, prime minister of Greece, admitted that he was worried by the calls for a military coup coming from paramilitary organizations, staffed with former officers who have served in the country’s elite military units. A post published on the website of the Special Forces Reserve Union called for the creation of a government “guaranteed by the armed forces”. Simos Kedikoglu, government spokesman, told the Guardian that “the overwhelming majority in the armed forces are devoted to our democracy. The few who are not will face the consequences.”

The recent legal actions against the radical Golden Dawn party and arrests of its leaders could have played a role in the radicalization of the army’s reservists.

A recent report commissioned by the European Parliament noted that Greece was the most corrupt state in the 28-nation bloc and voiced fears over the rise of far-right extremism in the country. The report’s conclusions are grim: “Researchers found Greece overwhelmed by high unemployment, social unrest, endemic corruption and a severe disillusionment with the political establishment”.

It is obvious that such an environment is perfect for a military coup. Some unofficial reports claim that the radical Golden Dawn party has tremendous support within the military and law enforcement agencies. The government’s crackdown on the Golden Dawn may have prompted the radicals within the military to look for nondemocratic and nonpolitical options of obtaining power.

German’s finance minister has admitted that Greece will need a new IMF bailout in the next several months. IMF bailouts are always accompanied by budget cuts and unpopular political measures. It is possible that the next Greek bailout will have to be supported by the German army, because the Greek army is on the verge of turning against the Greek government.

Albanians stage protest against Montenegro's PM

PODGORICA -- A group of Albanians living in New York gathered to protest in front of the UN against Montenegrin PM Milo Đukanović over his "unfulfilled promise."

The media in Podgorica reported that the protest was organized last week by an association gathering Albanians in the Unites States, and coincided with Đukanović's address to the UN General Assembly.

Montenegro's ruling DPS party MP Luidj Skrelja, however, told reporters that there was "no reason for the protest, especially not aimed against Đukonović."

According to him, Đukanović is "the last address where a protest should be held."

Skrelja believes that the prime minister is "very much dedicated to improving the position of minorities in Montenegro, including the Albanians."

“Voice of America” says that a group of Albanians coming from Michigan and who were representing the highlands of Albania protested against the participation of the Montenegrin Milo Gjikanovic in this dinner. But a representative of the Albanian-American Council declared that Mr.Gjukanovic was not invited.

President Bujar Nishani addressed a speech at the participants, saying that the achievements of the Albanian people would have been difficult without the help of friends and allies.

Prime Minister Edi Rama considered the achievements of the Albanian-Americans as a clear success model of how Albania can become in its path to become a developed democracy. He added that he honors with great admiration the Albanian-American community, which according to Rama is a national treasury.

This is the 17th year that the Council honors who have contributed for the Albanians wherever they are. One of them has also been the former United States President, Bill Clinton, and the former British Prime Minister, Tony Blair.

Nishani: We need justice reform
 

Through a strong debate for the corruption of the judiciary, the Albanian President, Bujar Nishani, admitted in an interview for the Voice of America that Albania needs a Justice Reform.

Regardless of the problematic, Nishani defended the HCJ that he leads as an institution that has worked well and that has reached standards. Nishani also declared that there are no conflicts with the Rama government.“I have had no conflict. I have always preserved the symbolic and constitutional integrity of the President, although the political war has tried to get me involved. It is important for the Albanian institutions to build their relations based on the mutual institutional respect”, Nishani declared.When asked about the reformation of the HCJ, the President declared: “The justice system and the judiciary need a reform to become more transparent and efficient. Greece "wholeheartedly" supports Serbia's EU bid

ATHENS -- Greece, which will starting January 1 hold the EU presidency, will "wholeheartedly support Serbia's EU integration," says Serbian Prime Minister Dačić.

Dačić is also scheduled to meet with President Karolos Papoulias.

He told reporters that the first intergovernmental conference in the negotiations between Serbia and EU could take place in Athens in January.

"The Greek prime minister said that Greece would wholeheartedly support Serbia in European integrations. Which means that, if a decision is made in accordance with the recommendations of the European Council, an intergovernmental conference could take place in January in Greece," Dačić said.

Dačić said that he agreed with Samaras that the governments of Serbia and Greece should meet in the second half of 2014, and that such meetings should become regular.

"The talks with Greek PM Samaras was very important because Greece, like all other countries that have not recognized Kosovo, has been under pressure to change its position," Dačić said.

The leader of Greece's Golden Dawn party has been arrested in a crackdown on the group launched after the murder of a leftist musician.

Nikos Michaloliakos, 56, was arrested along with Golden Dawn MP and spokesman Ilias Kassidiairis and two other party members on charges of founding to a "criminal organisation".
It is the first time since 1974 that sitting members of Parliament have been arrested.
Authorities also said they arrested a local Golden Dawn leader in an Athens suburb, as well as nine other unnamed party members.
Two police officials said an operation by the counterterrorism unit is still ongoing, with a total of about 35 arrest warrants for Golden Dawn members issued. They spoke on condition of anonymity.
The arrests come 11 days after the killing of left-wing activist rapper Pavlos Fyssas by an alleged Golden Dawn member.
Though the party has vehemently denied any role in the killing, it has appeared to dent its appeal among Greeks and the government has worked to crackdown on the party.
Golden Dawn expressed outrage at the arrests in a text message to journalists.
"We call upon everyone to support our moral and just struggle against the corrupt system! Everyone come to our offices!," it said.
Mr Mihaloliakos warned on Friday that the party may pull its 18 lawmakers from parliament if the crackdown does not stop.
The move would prompt by-elections that could hurt the coalition government of Prime Minister Antonis Samaras, which has a slim majority of 155 MPs in the 300-seat parliament.
A formerly marginal organisation, Golden Dawn entered the Greek Parliament for the first time in May 2012, capitalising on Greece's deep financial crisis, rising crime and anti-immigrant sentiment, polling just under 7%. It has 18 deputies.
A government spokesman refused to comment on the details of the operation.
"Democracy can protect itself. Justice will do its job," Simos Kedikoglou told reporters.
In addition to Mr Michaloliakos and Mr Kassidiris, Golden Dawn deputy, Ilias Panayiotaros, gave himself up at police headquarters, telling police they were looking for him at a wrong address.
Another lawmaker, Yannis Lagos, has also been arrested.

Two senior police officials resigned for "personal reasons" after the killing and another two were suspended. Seven other police officers were suspended.
Greek police also arrested one of their own colleagues who was reportedly working as a bodyguard for the party, during a raid on its offices in the western town of Agrinio on Tuesday.
The government also began an inquiry into the activities of Golden Dawn, which won nearly 7% of the vote in 2012 elections.
Prime Minister Antonis Samaras has vowed not to let the party "undermine" democracy, and government officials say it must now be treated as a "criminal organisation".

BRUSSELS - Greece’s neo-fascist Golden Dawn threatens to spark snap elections by pulling all 18 of its members from the 300-seat parliament.
If Golden Dawn members walk out, then special elections would have to take place in every district they represent in order to replace them.
Golden Dawn leader Nikolaos Mihaloliakos on Thursday (26 September) said some polls indicate the opposition would win, which could undermine the ruling coalition, reports Reuters.
"Golden Dawn holds a weapon in its hands to cause a political earthquake. Those in charge should bear that well in mind," he said.

He said no final decision has been made yet to quit the assembly.
Interior Minister Yannis Mihelakis told Skai TV on Thursday that the snap elections would antagonise an already fragile government.
"The whole affair has already damaged the country enough. A general election would just make things worse," he said, referring to the recent murder of a left-wing rapper by a man with alleged Golden Dawn links.
Other leaders dismissed the threat and welcomed the group to leave the parliament.
"It's not a threat. It's a great opportunity," deputy prime minister Evangelos Venizelos told Reuters on Wednesday.
A poll by Rass for the Eleftheros Typos newspaper earlier this week found that support for the neo-fascist group plummeted by 2.5 percentage points to 5.8 percent following the fatal stabbing of Pavlos Fyssas.
Fyssas’ murder sparked protests against the group, when a self-proclaimed Golden Dawn member admitted to plunging a knife into the 34-year-old’s chest.
The party had seen a rise in popularity over the past year but has been accused by human rights groups of committing violent acts against immigrants and Greeks who oppose it.
Golden Dawn members, in some cases, posted YouTube videos of themselves destroying market stands run by immigrants.
Some 10,000 took to the streets in Athens last week in an anti-fascist demonstration organised by unions and activists.
Meanwhile, police made a handful of arrests of Golden Dawn members found illegally carrying or owning firearms. Officers also raided three police stations on Tuesday but only after the government replaced seven senior police officials to ensure “absolute objectivity”.
The government wants to dissolve the group.
But instead of an outright ban, senior officials have opted to find evidence that would label the party as a criminal organisation in a wider effort to undermine it.
A senior court official told reporters on Wednesday that Greek prosecutors investigating the group have already found evidence linking it to criminal activities.
Authorities are also investigating a statement posted overnight on Wednesday on the website of the Hellenic Special Forces Reserve Union.
The statement, allegedly posted by the special forces reservists, calls for the people to unite with the army to overthrow the governing coalition.
It said Greece should withdraw from its bailout obligations and that special courts should be set up to prosecute people responsible for Greece’s financial crisis.

In a turbulent 24 hours for Greece, anti-fascist protests became violent, an army website demanded the resignation of the government, and an official admitted they planted wire taps in the communications of a neo-Nazi political party.

The intelligence service official told the AFP news agency that the wire taps on Golden Dawn were authorised to prove alleged complicity in crimes following the murder of an anti-fascist rapper. Pavlos Fyssas, a 34-year-old hip hop artist, was fatally stabbed in an Athens commuter town on September 17 in an apparent ambush. The group has denied it had anything to do with the killing, but he was stabbed to death by a self-proclaimed supporter.

“The intelligence service has the authority to conduct wiretaps for reasons of national safety, provided there is judicial approval,” the source said. “Both random and targeted wiretaps have been carried out for quite some time.”

The murder of Mr Fyssas caused outrage across Greece.

On Wednesday at least 10,000 people demonstrated in Athens in an anti-fascist protest organised by unions and political parties.

Any attempt by Golden Dawn to force elections could backfire, Venizelos says

Greece's far-right Golden Dawn party would damage itself if it tries to force elections by walking out of parliament in a pique over a government crackdown, the country's deputy prime minister said on Wednesday.
Evangelos Venizelos, who is also foreign minister in a coalition government, was responding to Greek media reports that Golden Dawn, which denies a neo-Nazi label, was considering pulling its 18 deputies from the 300-seat parliament, hoping to force political change.
"This is a kind of political suicide for them," Venizelos predicted in an interview with the top editors at Reuters in New York. "It's not a threat. It's a great opportunity."
The party did not confirm any plans for a walkout on its website and did not immediately respond to calls from Reuters.
Golden Dawn entered parliament for the first time last year, capitalizing on discontent over a financial crisis that has seen incomes plummet and unemployment rise to nearly 28 percent. A fringe party until recently, it has become Greece's third most popular political force in opinion polls.
But its support dropped by a third this month after an anti-racism rapper was stabbed to death by a self-proclaimed supporter. Golden Dawn denied it had anything to do with the killing.
Greeks staged protests and the government ordered a crack-down on the party, including an investigation of any possible link to the murder. Athens fired senior police officers suspected of protecting Golden Dawn members.
Human rights groups have long linked Golden Dawn supporters, who dress in black and are often seen giving Nazi-style salutes, to violent attacks on immigrants, something the party denies.
Venizelos said the government was taking all possible legal measures against Golden Dawn, including sending police and prosecutors to investigate other possible criminal activities such as illegal fundraising and links to the underworld.
Greek media reported that Golden Dawn was considering pulling its deputies from parliament in reaction to the crackdown, hoping to force new elections, at least in some constituencies if not nationally, in order to show their standing is strong and to shake the political establishment.
Venizelos said opinion polls showed their standing had quickly declined after the killing, which had unified mainstream political parties against Golden Dawn.
A survey by the ALCO pollsters in the days after the stabbing found support for the party fell by 4 percentage points to 6.8 percent. Nearly 80 percent of Greeks said such violent acts were a threat to democracy.
Venizelos said if the far-right deputies pulled out, elections would take place in only 15 constituencies and give an opportunity for parties to present a united front.

The negative impact, political and judicial, that Fyssas’ killing had on Golden Dawn is severe, and the party is now facing the possibility of its MP’s and members being arrested on the charges of forming a criminal organization.
The poll that was conducted by NewsIt, which shows Golden Dawn losing its percentages, has played a catalytic role in the developments.
The last few hours, the notion that Golden Dawn may decide to resign and its Parliamentary Group may be put out of the Greek Parliament is a hot topic.

In such a possibility, the runners-up will be asked to take the seats of the resigned MP’s, although this is not particularly possible, according to the scenarios. In case the runners-up do not accept to undertake the parliamentary seats, then there will be repeat elections.
The repeat elections will be held only in the 15 regions that have elected Golden Dawn MP’s.
In such a case, it remains a riddle what will be done with the state deputy that has been elected with Golden Dawn.
